Customer Questions & Answers

When spraying on a fence does this product run a lot? Will it soak into the wood so I don't have to back roll it?

I'm looking for a product where I don't have to back roll it if there's runs. I want to spray it on and let it go. Basically will all the runs soak into the wood and not be noticeable?
Asked by: Steve
Steve, with an even spray, runs are unlikely to occur. However, if sprayed unevenly and they do run, it may be noticeable if not back rolled. Remember to apply when no precipitation is expected for 24 hours and temperature is between 50-90°F and will remain above 50°F for at least two hours after application. Lower temperatures and/or high humidity may cause slower dry times. Do not thin the product. Stir thoroughly before and during use. To prevent bubbles in the finish, do not shake. Apply using a good quality nylon/polyester bristle brush (preferred method), short nap paint/stain pad, roller with ¼” nap, or spray. (Do not use a pump sprayer). For airless spray application, use a .015- .021 inch tip and 100 mesh filter screen at 250-500 psi. Backbrush drips, runs or surface puddles when rolling or spraying. Always work from end to end on a few boards at a time and maintain a wet edge.

how much do i need?

i need to treat my deck that is 600 square feet, how much do i need to do that?
Asked by: ruegurl
I used 20 gallons on a 2500 sq ft 2 story house cedar siding including a small deck. One 5 gallon can should be enough for your deck

Can I use this product to cover a previously stained and/or painted decking to cover the red and lighten the look?

The previous owner had applied an old red deck stain on one section and an old red deck paint on another section of our large deck. The red absorbs the heat on this south facing deck so we are looking for a way to change the color to a tan shade. The red color also reflects against the light house color making the house look "pink" which is not the look we wish to achieve. Thanks for any advice.
Asked by: Bon49
I dont think it would work to cover the red. This is a stain. Wolmans do have a different one that is more of a solid cover for decks.

Can I use this product on treated decking?

Can I use Raincoat tinted natural cedar water repellent on treated wood? Is the prep just as critical as with applying other deck stains and paint
Asked by: Victor
the deck just has to be clean. You can get a deck cleaner or I make my own with water, bleach (from one third bleach to half bleach) and few tablespoon of murphys oil soap. Use a one or two gallon sprayer. Let the mixture sit on the deck for At least 20 minutes. Wash off. Don't get it on any windows or pet's paws. It will burn your skin too but it cleans well.

5-gal. Raincoat Tinted Natural Cedar Water Repellent Sealer is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 19.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stay with what works I had been using Wolman Raincoat for years. Suddenly it was not available in my local stores so I tried another highly recommended, more expensive brand. BLAH! It was junk. Flaked off after one season. SO, if I have to order Wolman Raincoat online and wait a few days, so be it. It goes on my deck very easy with a roller. It dries fast, usually 4 to 6 hours in the sun. It lasts for 2 to 3 seasons. It costs less that most other brands. Doesn't flake. I love Raincoat and I'm staying with what I know works!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for my Old Deck I found this a easy purchase for me in remote Eastern Maine. As a on-line shopper delivery was fast and on time. Application was a joy using a one gallon sprayer. It took less then one hour on a 25x10 foot deck with a railing and steps. The wonderful surprise after two days drying there was a short shower. The rain drops formed small puddles as if my 40 year old had been coated with clear plastic. The instructions state to coat once about every three years. I highly recommend this product and would buy again although I have enough left for two more coats.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Good Product Other reviews are correct about the ease of installation and quality. This was a special order where I live and I had it delivered to my home (same price as store delivery). If I did this again I would do the following: Have the product delivered to the store. Upon arrival, open package to determine that there was no damage and it is the correct product (color, etc). You can then leave all of the packaging materials at the store. Why bring all of that home and then pay to have it collected with your garbage? You can also go directly to the paint department and tell them to put the bucket in their paint shaking machine for a while. This might not be a problem with a gallon, but a 5-gallon bucket is another matter. I shook it well ( very heavy) and thought that it was good to apply, but then found that the color was more yellow that it should be. Not too much of a problem since it was used in an area that was not too noticeable. Upon finishing with the entire bucket, I opened it up so I could clean it out and save the bucket only to find that there was a substantial amount of the brown dye stuck to the bottom of the bucket. Apparently it is heavier than the other colors and settled out and never shook back in. If it had been well mixed, I'm sure that the color would have been perfect. But shaking a 5-gallon bucket is harder than you think.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best to maintain newer decks On the unbias side: This is great stuff, I believe it will do what they say it will do, if you follow the 2 coats every 3 years, as the can says... The color is great! For me: I let my deck go too far, after 3 coats I'm almost happy with the results, maybe another coat on the high traffic areas.... I should've sanded it down in many places, but I'm sorta lazy... The pressure washer really cleaned this old deck, I should've bought the resorer, as planned, but the thought of chipping paint made me nauseated... I do love this stuff and will purchase again, on newer material... But next time I'll be using old motor oil on this recent job, until the porch falls in...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to apply........sheds water..........too early to completely evealuate This stair was easy to apply with a brush designed for staining. I have only had it down for a week so I can't evaluate it's long term endurance. Water is beading on it so that's good. I used the Wolman Deck Brite to clean my deck before applying the stain. So far..........so good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It looks Great Used 5-gal Wolman Raincoat tinted natural cedar water repellant sealer for the house cedar siding and cedar garage doors. Sprayed on with a Wagner 0518050 Control Spray Double Duty Paint Sprayer. So far have sprayed on about 10 gallons over a period of 3 days, some areas had to be done with a brush because the over spray would have wasted too much sealer. It is very thin, just like water, and if anything a finer minimum setting on the spray gun would have been useful. Used one coat. Initially I did not like the color but after drying it looks great. After each day use cleaned the spray gun by running some water and bit of dish soap through the nozzle. It is hard to clean off of surfaces if let to dry-used mineral spirits. Before sealing I used Sodium Percarbonate Uncoated/ Kosher 25 Lb. pack (Amazon) to clean the cedar mixed at 1lb per gallon, using a pump sprayer. Washed the white bubbly coating off after 20mins with an electric pressure washer. Some areas had to be done twice.
