Answer:
No,...this is not a wiring configuration the average DIYer should attempt with this particular device.
Check the Woods site to see if they have a 3-way version of this time

Answer:
No, it's not 3-way compatible. (The 4 wires are Hot, Neutral, Ground, and "Output (Hot)".)
Also, it requires a neutral wire be available in the electrical box. Some lights/fans are wired where only "Hot In" and "Hot Out" are available at the switch; power runs to the ceiling fixture first, then a short no-neutral run to the switch box. (Just the two wires that need to be shorted together via the switch Read More

Answer:
I bought two of these from another store, and both of them failed immediately,....doing exactly the same thing you describe.
There is no consistency in this,...a setting of 60 minutes could last 23 minutes, or five minutes.
All time setting malfunction. Return the product to the store for a refund, and request Home Depot remove this defective product from their inventory.

Answer:
Yes,...from the four wires on the timer: white to white, black to the power wire coming into the box, green to ground, and red to the device being controlled,.....bathroom fan, light, etc.

Rated 2.8 out of 5 by 8 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Digital timer This a good product to install in areas where lights get left on and it is not apparent from inside the house. I installed it at the garage entry. Works well. August 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Timer went bad in less than a week started out good, then all of a sudden, 60 minute setting became 60 seconds! then 30 minute setting is less than 5 minutes. all of the settings are random, and less than the time they say! February 23, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't order this There is a reason they don't carry it on the shelf andyou have to special order it. I was looking for a simple one hour bathroom fan timer after fighting to install it because it's such a big thing to jam into the box I find that the one hour timer is only running for 15 minutes. after digging more online I saw other people commenting that the timing was not correct. I also saw comments that they run faster and faster as they age I contacted customer service, their response was to take it back to the store, no offer to help, nor apology for their poor product or QC. Home Depot has lots of good timers, this company is not something that's worth the time to install, buy another brand. April 14, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Acceptable product Liked the multiple levels of run time. Wire color codes were a little confusing. December 9, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works Well Easily installed in garage in place of regular switch. Whenever I exit the garage when it's dark, it lights the way in and out. One hour setting is quite long enough when working in the garage. Red light makes it easy to find in the dark. September 13, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by worked well for 1st couple of years but timer has now stopped working Was installed by an electrician for the ventilation fan when we re-modeled our bathroom. It worked well for the first couple of years, The timer decided it would switch from "minutes" to "seconds" so the longest period of time the fan will run is 60 seconds before it shuts off instead of 60 minutes. The 20+ year old manual switch for the fan in the powder room still works fine, and I am regretting paying for the digital timer feature. November 29, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Quiet and works well Bought this for a bathroom wall heater. Is rated up to 15 amps & 1800 watts wall heater is 12.5 amps & 1500 watts. Works well totally silent operation. If there is anything I don't like, the red led for off stays on when switch is off. I guess this makes sense but a timed feature to put led out would have been to my liking. December 18, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Received not working unit I had to return this product in store since it was defective. December 11, 2013
