I have used Woods timers in the past and each has been very reliable. But when I wanted to make another purchase, I researched this particular model and was surprised to discover complaints about the timer resetting after either a power on or power off transition. After further research, I learned that one person, who is familiar with electronics, suspected that during the power on or power off transition, electrical noise generated by the load (the appliance or lamp you are switching on or off) might be the problem. After he placed a surge protector between the timer and the load, that fixed this problem for him.
I emailed the manufacturer about this design flaw and received the following response: “We are well aware of all comments/concerns and the newest 50009 has a green or blue dot on back of timer that indicates the newer design.”

My timer, with a green dot on the back, was without power for a week and it did not lose its program.

Rated 2.1 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product This timer appeared to come dead in the package, but the directions say to use a toothpick to push the "reset" and it comes alive. Unlike its smaller brother, leave this timer without power for a week, and the display disappears; reconnecting power and the internal battery recharges. Easy to program, works reliably. HOME DEPOT's description is accurate and it works. What more can I say? July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by best ever The timer instructions were easy to follow. The battery charged up in a few minutes and it keeps perfect time. Using the random times let you feel safe to go on a vacation for days or weeks at a time. I would recommend this timer to all my friends. November 3, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Dead on Arrival Internal battery was dead on arrival. It doesn't work. Apparently this is the case with most of them. Unbelievable that they still sell this product. Don't buy!!! March 3, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by product didn't work it arrived and appeared to be in perfect condition. it will not however take a charge. i suspect the internal battery is shot. if we can find the packaging it will definitely be returned to the store October 7, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Did not work from the beginning Product has internal battery that would not charge, per instructions. This is the third electronic-style timer I have purchased from Home Depot in several years....and NONE have ever worked. Very disappointed! March 18, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Product loses it program and fails. Product seems to have a design flaw. It worked for 3 days then lost its program and the time of day. I reprogrammed it and again it worked for a few days and then lost the program and the time of day. March 11, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not Reliable At any given time, the timer will reset to 12:00 for no apparent reason when asked to turn something on, loosing all on & off settings. July 21, 2013
