Answer:
No, it won't sit on top, has to be mounted in the switch box. And it is a challenge due to space, but probably will fit. Mine did with some pushing and shoving and cussing. I have a two toggle switch plate. I found one on the internet, but very expensive. I decided to take my dremel tool and modified the toggle plate.

Answer:
I didn't program just one day, instead I did what you are asking for a group of days. But instead of selecting a group you can just select a single day like M or F. The group of days can be selected and predefined as: M-F, S-S, or M-F S-S.
You can select a on time and off time. But what I didn't try was multiple on-off sequences on a single or group of days or a mix of on-off for various day groups.

Answer:
it works without one, but nice to have it. I put the green and white together since I had the same problem. Four wires come out the switch: green for ground, white for common, black for line in and red for load.

you have to have some experience, 2 black wires means 1 of the blk wires is the hot at 1 end of the switch and or the switch leg to the light fixture at the other switch those are referenced as the common,
the red with the 2nd blk wire you didnt use as the common are referenced as the travelers.
the common wires go to the black of the new timer and the colored black screw of the new 3 way switch and the other 2 red wires from the timer take the 2nd blk to one red and the other red to red,
theres all kinds of little visual indicators like a white color band prehaps on the timers 2nd red wire.
then just hook up the new non timer side of the 3 way switch using the same method,
look in the box if its romex wire then you will see a 3wire romex and a 2 wire romex we dont count the ground its a givin.
the 3 wire romex is the set of travelers and the 2 wire romex is the power at one end and the wire to the lights at the other switch.
if the timer has a white neutral wire then you have to get it under the house white wire thats just passing through the box under the same wirenut. Read Less

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 38 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 7 day timer wall switch I needed a timer at the wall switch. this replaces the switch, can be programmed with simple programming or knock yourself out with each single day having a separate program, days of week, etc. I chose the simple programming as that is all I needed. The switch has battery backup good for about 30 days. Its a bit expensive but good quality. I have one I bought 2 yrs ago for the front porch lights and it is still working fine. I put this on my garage dusk to dawn light. October 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great Easy to wire up and it works every time-no pun intended June 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Woods timer Have it for 2 months now an it works great! No more having to remember to turn on/off outdoor flood lights. May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great timer Looks good, easy to program, easy to install, and even though it is one of the cheapest timers on HD website, I highly recommend this. I like the subtle red light that goes on when my outside lights are on so I know that its working! March 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great convenience This timed switch is a wonderfully convenient. The front porch lights come on and go off automatically. Don't have to remember to the light on before leaving or when we go to bed. We love this! Don't know how programming it will be yet. My son, who has a switch at his house, installed it and programmed it. I have the instructions handy and don't think it will be too bad when I have to do it myself. March 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 7day timer The product works great. I had no problem programming the timer and the direction for installation were easy to understand. Note, the timer does need a ground wire that I had to add to my circuit. January 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 7-Day Programmable Digital Timer - White Display could be a little larger but otherwise install was easy and product works fine. December 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by simple to install and program must have all wire such as common, hot, ground and the other hot wire going to the light. Also fits in a light switch box with other switches. Good purchase for the cost with many different program times, I think up to 7. Also comes with wire nuts and screws to install. I have only had it installed for about 2 weeks with no problems.
