The description of how this latch operates is totally confusing. It LOOKS like it is some sort of "automatic" latch. But the description says that it "grabs the 2 3/8" post and lifts it automatically to open the gate". Really? It lifts a post set in concrete? How does this thing REALLY work anyway? I love the idea of an automatic latch if that's what it is. But I have no clue what this description is telling me. Does it still allow the gate to swing in either direction?

Update to my question: I found a much better solution than the butterfly latch. And contrary to customer care's assertion that the butterfly latch is not automatic, yes of course it is automatic. The gate is not automatic, but the latching IS automatic. You don't have to do anything but swing the gate, and it automatically latches. Untouched by human hands.

I don't know what the latch I found is called, but they are sold in farm supply stores as well as the Internet. It is much more versatile because unlike the butterfly which requires a round metal post to latch onto, this latch has its own mechanism for both sides, and the fixed side can be mounted to anything, another post, a wall, or a wooden post. It has a protrusion on the gate that is captured from either direction by a gravity drop down piece of metal on both sides. Just lift up that little piece to open the gate. I can see aluminum against steel possibly sticking at some point. This gate latch never sticks and latches very easily. I bought a bunch of them for all my chain-link gates. Read Less

You attach this to the 1-3/8 inch gate frame upright. As you close the gate, the "butterfly" mechanism swings into the 2 inch fence post and as it strikes the 2 inch post one of the "butterfly" wings will swing up - opening the latch. As the gate continues to swing, the second "butterfly" wing (which is still down) stops the gate movement, and at the same instant the raised "butterfly" wing will drop Read More

As the gate continues to swing, the second "butterfly" wing (which is still down) stops the gate movement, and at the same instant the raised "butterfly" wing will drop back down into its closed position and capture the 2 inch post. To open the gate, you just lift one of the "butterfly" wings. The gate can swing in either direction. The mechanism is very simple and reliable - and when properly installed and aligned, this device works great as a dependable and easy to use latch mechanism. Read Less

Answer:
The Butterfly Latch is not automatic. It is attached to the gate post. When the gate is manually pushed close from either side, it hits the latch and the force of the push moves the butterfly "wing" upwards so the gate frame advances and is "locked" into place as the wing drops back down. The post itself naturally doesn't move.

Answer:
Galvanized Aluminum ;-)
Seriously now: The body is aluminum, the wings are galvanized steel.
You will need at least 2" clearance, and 2.5" for the latch to self-close.
I bought it
I installed it
I regretted buying it
and I was too lazy to return it.
As an FYI, I would not buy it again, or advise anyone to buy it.

Answer:
The latch attaches to a 1-3/8" pipe on one side and latches to a 2-3/8" pipe on the other side. This isn't the product dimension. This DOES have wings. The dimensions are industry Chain Link pipe sizes to specify which they attach to.

Current gate latch no longer works due to settling of ground. Need a new latch that will work using less spce between the two gates. Only other option is to take a gare apart and cut a little length of the top and botton, drill new holes and remount.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Meh! There is a design issue wit the wings, You'll need at least 2.5" clearance to have have that latching itself. Secondly, the wings are poorly designed as they have a down angle of 5 degrees (To return to horizontal) This angle makes it quite hard to finagle a self close. July 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great latch This was the only latch I seen that the latch was on the gate side. It has a larger construction, mounted onto the small pipe gate and latching onto the large post pipe. It is working great, self latching as expected. February 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Butterfly Latch This latch was easy to install, durable and secures the gate each time it is closed. June 14, 2016

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works If installed just right Only problem I had was getting the latch lined up just right so that it latched on its own when closing. Other that that little frustrating task, I like it. September 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Aluminum butterfly latch Great product , you can open gate from both sides and it latches shut behind you. Keeps animals and small children safe and secure December 9, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to Install, Easy to Use Our dogs kept pushing the old gate closure and it would pop open, this requires 2 steps - 1 to lift the latch and another the pull open the gate because the other side of the opening stays closed! The installation took 5 minutes! Great product. Just make sure it is label before you head to the cashier. I took a picture of the shelf label. June 17, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by its complicated this gate latch fit the purpose of what we needed. not ideal for our gate the way our land is situated. oh well, what can ya do? July 5, 2014
