Customer Questions & Answers

2-3/8 in. x 1-3/8 in. Aluminum Clink Butterfly Latch

The description of how this latch operates is totally confusing. It LOOKS like it is some sort of "automatic" latch. But the description says that it "grabs the 2 3/8" post and lifts it automatically to open the gate". Really? It lifts a post set in concrete? How does this thing REALLY work anyway? I love the idea of an automatic latch if that's what it is. But I have no clue what this description is telling me. Does it still allow the gate to swing in either direction?
Asked by: Tinman98
Update to my question: I found a much better solution than the butterfly latch. And contrary to customer care's assertion that the butterfly latch is not automatic, yes of course it is automatic. The gate is not automatic, but the latching IS automatic. You don't have to do anything but swing the gate, and it automatically latches. Untouched by human hands. I don't know what the latch I found is called, but they are sold in farm supply stores as well as the Internet. It is much more versatile because unlike the butterfly which requires a round metal post to latch onto, this latch has its own mechanism for both sides, and the fixed side can be mounted to anything, another post, a wall, or a wooden post. It has a protrusion on the gate that is captured from either direction by a gravity drop down piece of metal on both sides. Just lift up that little piece to open the gate. I can see aluminum against steel possibly sticking at some point. This gate latch never sticks and latches very easily. I bought a bunch of them for all my chain-link gates.

Is this Aluminum or Galvanized steel?

The description says 2-3/8 in. x 1-3/8 in. Aluminum Clink Butterfly Latch, but the text associated says "This galvanized steel latch features wings ... " Which is it?

What is the minimum space required for the latch to work on twwo gates closing in the middle?

Current gate latch no longer works due to settling of ground. Need a new latch that will work using less spce between the two gates. Only other option is to take a gare apart and cut a little length of the top and botton, drill new holes and remount.

Can this latch be mounted on a flat surface?

Can this latch be mounted on a flat surface?
Asked by: Cec
From the looks of it, it appears to be attached by a U-bolt to a round post. However, depending on how creative and handy you are, almost anything is possible. This latch is also one of the first I looked at when trying to find self-latching gate latches for my gates, but I did not feel like it was a good latch system. I found a better one, and there are several manufacturers and styles. You can Google self-latching and two-way latches. Our local farm supply store also has them. A picture of one type is attached and you can see it is attached to a wood post. I have one attached to the corner of a metal building, and the rest of them are used with conventional chain link fence posts. They work either way, and swing and latch either way. Well, it won't let me upload a picture, just check out surelatch dot com. I used the Junior latch. The mounting can be adjusted so that it latches effortlessly; you don't have to slam it to latch. I do not believe the butterfly would work that well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent gate latch... If you dont have this latch on your gates you should. Helps keep your children, grandkids and pets safe and secure in your yard.. It's self closing and secure. There's a place on latch for a keeper, a lock or attachment to help keep your yard secure. They are made well, last one kept my half acre yard secure for 15 years.. It also comes in a 2 inch post size too...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gate latch My cleaning service kept leaving the gate open, so I needed a quick, cheap solution (plus $50 worth of spring hinges). This catch did the trick-no more escapees from my house!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great latch This was the only latch I seen that the latch was on the gate side. It has a larger construction, mounted onto the small pipe gate and latching onto the large post pipe. It is working great, self latching as expected.
