We've have the MTD-branded great-granddaddy to this model and used it regularly since 1987! to mulch oak leaves each fall from a 1/2-acre lot with 12 mature oaks, and we *love* the rake-in chute design. Ours may be finally giving up the ghost (engine problems), which is why I'm looking at a new one. Read Less

Answer:
Hello Steve,
The vac unit can simply be pushed around to suck the leaves up. The other is a stand up unit that would need to have the leaves raked and then placed into the hopper for shredding. The upright chipper would better handle sticks and branches if that is the main usage, however the vac style unit can handle small branches as well.
Thank you for your question.

2 in. 208 cc Tip-Down 3-in-1 Gas Chipper Shredder is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty nice machine I purchased this chipper shredder mainly to make leaf compost. It was easily assembled. Start up has been straight forward. I find that I have to move the hopper up and down to get it to empty completely. The discharge collection bag does not seal well with the nylon strap. A bungee helps this.

The tilt down bin enables me to rake leaves directly into the machine without having to pick up the leaves and spilling them all over. There are several improvements with this new model. I preferred the plastic gas tank but this model has a metal one. The machine starts easy and grinds with ease. It is late in the season for me so most of my leaves are wet so the hopper is not sucking them up easily and I have to use a stick to move them along. I am sure I would not have this problem if the leaves were dry. Overall, very satisfied.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My Second Shredding Day Received it 2 days ago. Inordinate amount of trouble trying to add oil - can't reach between the engine components to remove oil filler caps. I was almost ready to pack it up and send it back for poor design. My shredding is mostly pine straw. Very slow going the 1st day: machine jamming, poking around in the chute with a stick to clear it. My 2nd day, though, I have it whipped - I think. Pine straw and leaves have to be absolutely dry and they will slide right through. It will produce raw mulch at a very good rate. As for adding oil: get an auto-parts store funnel with long clear tubing attached. Works like a dream. I now like my shredder.

Getting bag on and off is a pain - don't know how long the bag will hold out and have to be replaced. I wish someone would come up with an easier way to take the bag on and off, or come up with an alternate collection system. Otherwise, I am pleased with the performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from NICE!!!!! This chipper shredder was easy to assemble and easy to crank; but you can't maneuver it easily until the hopper is attached. The hopper is used to push or pull it around.

I really appreciate the product and would use it daily, if I had the chance. We've got a big yard with lots of trees...which leads to lots of leaves and branches. I love both the larger branch chipper (on the side) and the leaf/smaller branch chipper. Assembling it was fairly painless - about 30 minutes, following the directions - really just to attach the leaf chute. It's small enough to fit easily in the garage, a bit bulkier than an average lawnmower, but not as big as may seem. I have used it 6/7 times since purchasing a month and a half ago (again, lots of leaves and branches - that I let build up over the last 12-14 months) and have found it fairly easy to start. About 4/5 pulls is the norm. It's louder than the average lawn mower, so mid-day work is best if you have close neighbors (and want to be courteous). I use earmuffs, the included safety goggles - which was a nice feature - and a simple dust mask when I'm using it. I found there will be particles flying about even when the included bag is used. It does what it says it will do...chop big down to small and fairly efficiently. I tend to dump a lot into the leaf/small branch chute and found a larger/long branch is good to help push the chute materials down and around to get to the blade. From there, easy chopping. I've been following the guidelines...bigger branches on the side chute, smaller branches and leaves in the big chute and have had no troubles so far. I also check the oil before each use and have not had to replace yet. I do smaller jobs and expect, once I get the yard fairly clean, that it will be much smoother sailing (and less sailing) in the upcoming months. I'm very happy with the purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Performer This machine is great! I've used it twice so far since purchase, and its handled everything I've thrown at it. My only criticism of the machine is the location of the oil filler cap and the oil dipstick. The chipper inlet chute is located right in front of the oil filler cap and dipstick cap. In order to fill the engine with oil or check the oil level, I had to remove the chipper chute...which didn't take long (only 3 bolts hold the chute in place), but was inconvenient. I would have thought there was a better way to do this. Otherwise, I'm impressed with this machine's performance.
