At what height should I cut my lawn?

Asked by: Joed
Bermuda should be cut pretty low. <1.5". However, most people don't have a level enough lawn to do that with a rotary mower, or a reel mower. Keep in mind that the only way to keep your lawn at 1.5 is to scalp it in the spring before green up and then maintain at that height (Bermuda only). The lower grass height will result in a denser lawn, crowding out weeds better than tall grass. The opposite of what the other guy said. Lower grass height will also require more maintenance (alfalfa for fertilizer, for example) every 30-45 days on a strict watering schedule. If your lawn is level, and I mean golf course level...skip the rotary and get a gas reel mower. You won't regret it.

I love the way this mower is SO light & easy to maneuver that I can guide it easily over the rough terrain in parts of my yard. I finally learned not to get features that I don't really use which make the mower heavy. This mower starts so easily, too. I can't think of anything that I dislike about it. The 163cc Briggs & Stratton motor has all the power that I need to cut down heavy weeds & plants such as alfalfa growing in my extended yard. I have had my Yard Machine for about 2 months & was delighted to have it delivered to me. I definitely like it much better than the mower that I had previously. Grass that is heavy & wet does not seem to clog going into the bag as it did on the mower that I had prior to this one. It exceeds my expectations in every way. Please see in attached photo how a 72 year old woman can pull the mower back up a hill because it is so light!!

That mower still works fine but I needed a second one, and this new one is even better: no manual choke or priming bubble. But just like my old mower, it starts with only 1 or 2 pulls of the cord. The Briggs & Stratton motor is a workhorse and I intentionally sought out a mower with a B&S motor. This new mower is easy to handle. It's not self-propelled but doesn't need it. My old mower was purchased to mow 3/4 acre of lawn in the Rockies. This new one is for a hilly 3/4 acre of fescue grass in the Piedmonts and works just as well. Also, changing the wheel height is much easier than my 15-yr old version. The minor assembly is not hard but the pictures on the box do not help; do it with the instructions instead. Also, the grass catcher bag is a bit stiff and doesn't smoothly slide onto the sleeve frame--I only use the mulcher side chute so haven't yet given another the grass catcher another try yet. I strongly recommend this tough little mower. I'm not the handyman type, so any machine that works like it should, year after year, is my choice.

It is identical to a similar one I bought about 6 years ago which finally bit the dust. Mower starts right up, runs well, plenty of power, does a good job. The grass catcher could work a little better, if the lawn is slightly damp sometimes the grass winds up clumped in the cutting area or stops at the front of the catcher.

I wanted a push mower because self propelled ones have more things to go wrong with them. Also wanted a bigger motor because I have a thick lawn. This one has the bigger 163cc engine. Took it out of the box, put it together, takes 10 minutes, started on 2nd pull. Went out to mow lawn, which was high due to recent rain, and it went thru it like a knife to hot butter. It's light as can be, even when the bag is full of clippings. Have only used it 2 times, but so far excellent results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Briggs and Stratton push lawnmower I purchased this lawn more last week, I've only used it once so far but it performed very well. The price that I paid for this lawnmower I think was reasonable and I was able to use a coupon for 10% off so that was also a good thing. I have had lawnmowers in the past with Briggs and Stratton engines and I have always found that engine to be excellent. I am very satisfied with my purchase this far.

I bought this mower to replace an old yard machines mower which I have been using for six years and it was old when I started using it, now transferred to a family member who is using it. We will see if this has that durability, so far it starts easily, runs good, does an excellent job on the lawn. I like the option to not use the side discharge because you can mow near objects from both sides. As for quality it does not seem the factory pays attention to detail, cable wrapped around handle, little thing that does not affect operation but gripes me, what else didn't they pay attention to do right? One carriage bolt was missing for the handle, 25 cents at the local hardware, the T-nut was there so did they even put the bolt in? Again attention to detail and quality control. The assembly directions are minimal, but there is little assembly to do, just use common sense and refer to the directions since they are basic. No problems with bag falling off, or gas cap as mentioned in other reviews, no deck wash system which was available on some other brands of mowers in same price range,
