There is no special drain plug on these, like say cars have. You drain the oil from the same place you fill it in, i.e. from the oil fill tube. Unscrew the plug, turn the mower 90 degrees to the left and let it drain into a container of your choice. It's best to do the first oil change after 5hrs of use to get rid of break-in debris. Remember, these don't have oil filters like cars have, either. Then Read More

Can I return this lawn mower?

This question is from 21 in. Push Gas Walk-Behind Lawn Mower - California Compliant-DISCONTINUED

Bought the lawn mower on Saturday, June 15th. Put it together in no time, started it up with no problem. Went to cut the lawn and the front drags, chopped up the lawn. As I was trying to mow the rear left wheel fell off, I put it back on mowed some more and the wheel fell off again. In total I cut an area of 50' x 15' and the rear wheel fell of 3 times! Never finished cutting. For the $180. that I spent this is garbage! Can I return it?

Customer Reviews

Rated 2.9 out of 5 by 12 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Better than the reviews indicate. The reviews for this mower aren't great, I realize, but I think that if everyone had gotten the exact same mower I did the reviews would be pretty good. I bought this mower in 2010 or 2011, and I've been beating the living tar out of it ever since. It didn't get used much last year as I was injured and paid a landscaper to keep my lawn up, but aside from that it did 1/5th of an acre every week from about mid March until mid October every year for about five years with no issues. And here's the kicker, folks: I never serviced this mower. I added fuel and oil when it needed it, but other than that I did jack. I also often stored it while it was dirty as sin, and after cleaning it up today I found the deck was still in excellent shape. I'm about to service it for the first time (which is what led me here, looking for proper parts/numbers), but I suspect that if it hadn't spent the last year sitting that it would have fired right up once again. And it's never taken me more than three pulls to get it started before now, either. I can't remember for the life of me what I paid for this mower, but there are three things I know for sure: 1) It was the simplest, cheapest gas mower in the store when I bought it. 2) Knowing me, there's just no way in whatever that I paid more than $150 for it (I'm cheap). 3) Being as I'm sure that it was the cheapest option to begin with, and that I can't remember what I paid, I'm 100% certain that I'd buy this mower again. Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Did not work out of the box... I had this shipped to my house and had to "assemble" it which just consisted of putting in 4 bolts for the handle and put on the rear wheels, everything else was put together. I noticed the pull start looked like it was pushed in. The top circular recoil had a slant to it. I tried pulling it and it made a horrible grinding sound. I took it back to my local store and returned it for the same mower, just a slight model number difference. Once I got the new one home and ready it took a few pulls to get started but anytime after that it started with one pull. I guess it is worth the money since it is one of the cheapest mowers, I wasn't expecting much and once it worked, it did the job. May 8, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great machine for the money Going into the store I was set to get MTD 140cc, but then I saw this puppy with 158cc, also MTD engine, for $20 and I thought I have no problem using a little more power. The very first time, after adding oil, included, and fresh 87 octane gas it started on a second pull, but first pull almost got it going. Used it several times after that and it starts the same way, no issues whatsoever. On the box it said mulching, not sure why HomeDepot product spec says it's not. Very happy with the machine! It's simple and does the job, - exactly what I was looking for. I am a type of guy focused on value since I rarely understand why one would want to pay for features they don't use. Also, maintenance of any tool is the key to its longevity. May 27, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by DO NOT BUY I purchase this mower in 2011 and I kept it out of the weather and made sure I bought everything from the stuff you put in the gas so it would not smoke that was recommended and kept it clean everything. When the summer of 2012 hit I used it 2 times the 3rd it would not start if it started it would stop! I change the spark plug nothing work I would not recommend this mower in fact from the looks of it I;m going to go and purchase another one my yard looks like a "FORREST" RIGHT ABOUT NOW August 8, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Mower lasted one season, now can't start it Bought this mower in June of 2011, it was used maybe 5 times last year. Drained the gas and stored in indoors for the winter. Tried to start it this year, and it would not start. Runs for a few seconds and dies, I'm thinking the carb needs service, after 5 uses!!!Since its got a 2 year warranty, its in for service. Next year when the warranty runs out and wont start its probably going to the junk yard. I know this was not a lot of money, but an engine lasting only one season is ridiculous. May 30, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worked three times I bought this mower last year. but only used it 3 times before I started having problems. My front yard is small, 35 foot x 20 foot. I have replaced the carb three weeks ago, used it another 3 times and I ha to take the carb off AGAIN and clean it. It still just spits and sputters if I can get it started at all. only coughs and sputters, wont come up to R.P.M.... I've checked oil to make sure its full, drained the fuel to check for dirt or water, nothing but gas. Checked the spark plug, and spark, both good. I've changed the air filter, and nothing helps. It's brand new, maybe has a total of 2 hours run time. and thats it, junk. 250 bucks shot. It has NO choke, NO manual throttle. So it runs or it dont, nothing you can do but tell everyone you can NOT to buy a Briggs an Straton powered mower with the plastic carb. September 9, 2012
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Hard to Use on Uneven Lawn This machine is a great price and starts up every time like a charm. But is extremely hard to use on uneven lawn, and my lawn is pretty flat, just a few bumps here and there. Doesn't mow well over anything but the smoothest, most flat, most well grassed areas. Areas of crabgrass and other weeds, and uneven areas, just digs into ground. I think I should have purchased mower with LARGE rear wheels. Might have made mowing alot easier! May 19, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works well so far For the sum total of 2 times I've use this mower so far it has performed excellent. It was fairly east to start, the first time took several tries but I think that's to be expected. If you want a different clipping height you will have to remove and reinsert the wheels, but that doesn't happen often enough for me to care. If it matters to you then I'd get something else as it will be a pain. April 10, 2012
