Hello,
MTD does not provide horsepower ratings in connection with the engines we design. MTD specifies engine size and capacity using engine displacement, because it is a highly reliable and consistent way to describe an engine’s capacity.
NOTE: There is no direct mathematical conversion to calculate engine horsepower from engine displacement.
For the following reasons, and in the interest of clarity, MTD characterizes and labels the engines it designs by displacement only.
1) Displacement is the size of the engine’s cylinder bore multiplied by the distance of its pistons travel or “bore times stroke” as it is frequently described. It is a measurable physical property of the engine and is a consistent and measurable indication of an engine’s capacity.
2) Torque is the amount of twisting force an engine can generate; how much force it can put into turning a lawnmower blade or a drive belt. Torque measurements vary significantly with operating conditions and measurement techniques.
3) Horsepower is a calculated measure that includes torque, engine speed in RPM (Revolutions per Minute) and other factors. Like Torque, horsepower measurements can vary significantly with operating conditions and measurement techniques.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 8 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fantastic Machine If you are looking for a machine to get the job done in tough conditions this one will do just fine. I have owned it for 3 years now and I'm very happy. We get some huge snow falls here (12-30" is not uncommon 10+ times a year) this thing has never let me down. My best friend has the same machine in yardworks. His machine throws a little better but mine is quieter. I just did an impeller mod I found on YouTube and mine now throws just as far. I change the oil once a season and it is still pretty clean at the end. I'm sure there is better machines out there but if you are looking for a great blower at a really fair price. Look no further. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Decision I bought this to replace a 15 year old 10HP 28" MTD Yard Machine and so far I am delighted . It strong and just as easy to use as my old machine. March 25, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Can do better A neighbor operated one of these units for 15 years without issue. My unit started right up and chewed through up to 30 inches of snow like a champ....for about 3 hours. It then developed a nasty vibration when the augers were rotating and fried the auger drive belt. At the direction of MTD I took the unit to an authorized service center and left a deposit for the work. Unit is still with the service center awaiting common parts (drive belt) and "diagnosis". If you're looking for a durable snow blower backed by great customer service this one might not be for more you. February 25, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by No surprises, great machine This is my second Yard Machine snow blower. The first one lasted 14 years and only died because of a mistake on my part. This one arrived late in the season but I used it on several large packed areas of old snow and it worked great. One word of warning, the picture and description don't match. The photo showes a machine without the joy stick and that is what I got. The description cliams to have a joy stick schute control. Also the head light could use a louver to keep the light out of your eyes when it's dark out. March 11, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by This guy moves snow!! The November 7ft snow in 3 days killed the drive in my 15yr old 28" 9hp North Star snowblower. Reading the reviews suggested that this 30" 357cc (~13-14hp) Yard Machine should be a good replacement for my old snowblower. I must admit to only using the new snowblower 3 times, but I have to report that it really moves deep snow. With my old machine I had to blow half the driveway north and the other half south so that the blower could reach past the driveway edges. The new Yard Machine snowblower lets me go from one edge to the other, blowing the snow in the direction the wind is blowing. The snow from the first run down the furthest edge of the driveway clears the other edge of the driveway and goes way out in my yard. My neighbor that was watching from across the street told me he was amazed on how I was blowing snow clear over tall pine trees. Setup was easy, but the instructions were written by someone that likes to write puzzles. Be prepared to jump all over the manual on setup. I was easily able to cut through over 2.5ft of show with the Yard Machine. The controls are easy to use. I have not yet tried the electric starter, the engine starts easily manually even at 0-degrees. The cost for the Yard Machine is much lower than other brands with similar features. While the Yard Machine really moves snow, it isn't all sweetness and light. There are a few issues. The machine is heavy and can only turn by allowing one wheel to slip on the ground. There isn't a clutch or differential in the drive that allows the wheels to turn independently. Both wheels are locked together. Doing a lot of turning can wear you out quickly, especially at age 74. The other issue is that the top of the snow chute can't be adjusted for angle. One could easily take out windows and put holes in house siding if the chute is directed at the house. My old machine would allow me to move the chute down when working near the house. All the controls work through thin cables. I wonder on how long they will last? A minor complaint is that the instruction manuals are printed on paper that wouldn't serve as newspaper. I will probably copy the manuals to better weight paper. Considering all the positives and negatives, I view the 30" 357cc Yard Machine snowblower an excellent value. February 16, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Completely satisfied so far This snow thrower cut through a foot of snow with no problem, tossing snow 20-30 feet. The true test will be its durability but my new 30" blower replaced a 15 year old, 24" Yard Man which still works great. Hope this one lasts as long! March 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Basic features, powerful engine Starts easily, even with the pull starter. Arrived quickly and in good condition. Was easy to uncrate and assemble. Clears my driveway and walks very well February 7, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by This product serves my needs The size of this unit would be better if power steering was available February 25, 2014
