Will this solution harm plants-shrubs around deck_
Asked by: pat
Yes - it can. You should first wet down the plants, then cover them with something like a cheap plastic drop cloth (in the paint department). You'll want to minimize the amount of time the deck cleaner is in contact with the plants, and also make sure that if the solution gets to the soil, you rinse down with a LOT of clean water if you don't want to kill the plants. Make sure you rinse down the plastic sheeting afterwards, before removing it from your plants, so you don't inadvertently drip chemical directly on the plants.

Does this product contain bleach ?

Asked by: rwoz
No. This is a non-chlorine product.Aerating bleach is dangerous to the eyes, lungs, fauna, pets and more. This product works less aggressively than straight bleach but without the nasty side effects, risks, or wood color destruction.

I am planning to put new stain on my deck, I was hoping this Product will work on removing the old stain .

I used this product as instructed with Pressure washer. I did not remove the old stain . Is this product meant for removing old stain or I need to get the stain stripper ?
Asked by: swaphd
Just used on a 6' cedar fence in poor condition and it worked great. It will, imho, require a pressure washer. Using this product will make the pressure washing process much easier and also less risk of damaging the wood with over-aggressive pressure or surface contact. Do not let the product dry. Use on overcast or cool day if possible so product has time to work properly. Dilute per instructions.

Does your Deck & Fence Cleaner remove gray oxidation from wood.

This gray coloring appears to also be caused by UV light.

One side (the other side faces three neighbors, one third each). I did one third (one of three sides) of this 6' cedar fence with bleach in a spray bottle. Did the other two thirds with this ZEP product. The fence is about five years old, never treated, and was heavily coated with that black and white mold and oxidized, dirty looking appearance of an "old fence". Here in southern California it is somewhat dry (not Phoenix / Vegas dry, but not humid) but constantly sunny. The fence was almost uniformly blackish on top and thick whiteish gunk below. This is a normal pattern for cedar fences and has something to do with the angle of attack of the sun as well as proximity to the ground and greater moisture - or so I'm told. Anyway, it was a pretty common untreated fence. Both mixtures did a good job. Here is the comparison. Bleach: Cut 50%, it immediately destroyed black mold (chlorine destroys DNA and other organics on contact) and appeared to restore the fence instantly. Left on for 10 minutes, it continued to eat away at the decay. I hosed off part of the bleach section and power washed the rest. This entire 1/3 of the fence looks like new. However, it is lighter and more pale than the original cedar. it has effectively been 'bleached' and is now a lighter fence with less contrast. The cedar grain is still visible but less pronounced. You MUST wear eye protection along with clothes you don't care about. No matter how careful you are, the air will be filled with nasty things, including aerated bleach that can burn your lungs and eyes. My hair was actually lighter following this process, so also wear a hat. About a week following the treatment, I noted that pretty much everything growing along the fence had died. Nasty stuff. For the other two thirds of the fence I used the ZEP product. it was the only one HD stocked, so I gave it a try. Diluted according to the instructions, I liberally applied it to the fence. It was not as strong nor as fast acting as bleach. However, once hit with a pressure washer, it did a great job. Untreated wood hit with the pressure washer produced uneven results. The ZEP treated wood cleaned easily and much more uniformly. When dried, the ZEP treated fence was much closer to natural cedar color and not as bleached out as first section. In retrospect, I am glad it was separate section as the contrast was striking. Also, the adjoining yards and the earth beneath this product were never at risk. This is a huge improvement over a bleach solution. Cost: Diluting this product as directed yields about 5 gallons of product. Compared to the cost of decent cleaning bleach (Walmart) used at a higher concentration, it is about the same cost (within pennies). Best Practices: They advise against letting the product dry. While I'm guessing it will not hurt the wood, it will be effective than cleaning when wet. Ideally this should be used on an overcast or cool day so it has time to work (15 minutes) before drying. Use of a pressure washer: Pressure washing added considerable quality to both treatments. In my case, it was a requirement. This may vary depending upon your desired outcome, the condition of your fence, etc. Recommendation: Were I to do another fence tomorrow, I would purchase and use this product rather than bleach. Superior outcome. Comparable cost. Same time. Less bodily (eyes, lungs, face, skin, clothes) risk and environmental harm.

I was able to easily remove the mold, mildew and algae that had built up over the years. Because it is concentrated, it mixed well using the injector on my pressure washer. I mixed a bottle of concentrate and water at 5:1 to spray on the really tough spots and it took care of them easily. It meet my expectations. Time to seal the fence and deck if it ever stops raining.

I soaped my fake-wood deck down with this using down with my pressure washer then used hi-pressure rinse to clean it. The next day, there were lots of areas where the soap did not lift the green pollen that had landed on the deck. Seems like you need a scrubbing brush.. if that is the case, why use a soap?

Even when I mixed it at a higher ratio than recommended it didn't work great. I even poured it on straight in a couple of areas and saw little difference. Just using a power washer did more than this stuff but it was actually removing wood which is not good for the deck.

The dirt/moss/algae did not come off any easier. My pressure washer cleaned other untreated areas of my fence just as quickly and easily. Perhaps this product would work better on a deck.

We only had to use a little bit (4 oz.) for our deck and pressure washer. It is highly concentrated. Therefore, this gallon will last us a long time. It was well worth it though, because it took all the mildew and gunt off our deck so that we could stain it properly.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Gazebo roof Used to clean weathered and darkened cedar shingle roof on a wooden gazebo. Applied two treatments. Difficult to tell if product had any material impact above just pressure washing. Possibly good product to another type of application where results could be better evaluated.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay but had to use full strength When I used this in my power washer it did a poor job. To clean my deck I had to pour it on and go over is with a deck broom. Then let it sit for about 30 minutes and the results were no bad. Next time I will probably try a different product.
