Product Overview

ZeroEnergy is a unique, innovative heat recovery system that provides free hot water while your air conditioner (AC) system is running. It connects to both your outdoor AC unit and your water heater, helping them both work more efficiently. Because water heating can be as much as 30% of your total energy bill, the higher your current water heating bill, the quicker ZeroEnergy will pay for itself. ZeroEnergy works so well that in the warmer months when your AC is running constantly, the hot water portion of your energy bill can be reduced to zero. Please see the attached product and installation videos for more details. Installation is available through The Home Depot certified installer network, so please call 813-978-3733 to speak with an Olive Tree Energy technician for product and installation questions.

  • Creates free hot water during AC use which reduces your overall energy costs
  • Also produces hot water during heating season with heat pump systems
  • Reduces your carbon footprint and helps protect the environment
  • Has no pumps or moving parts to fail so requires no electrical power input
  • Requires zero maintenance and includes a 10 year warranty
  • Installs on all major brands of HVAC and water heater systems
  • Covered under the Magnuson-Moss warranty act, so won’t void any warranties
  • Less expensive and outperforms all other systems like tank-less, solar or heat pump water heaters
  • Works with HVAC package units ranging from 1.5 to 6 tons (larger systems available upon request)
  • Depending upon AC size, produces between 8 and 20 gal. of 50 degree rise hot water per hour of AC system run time
  • Manufactured in America by Olive Tree Energy and brought to you by Gone Green Earth--two companies specializing in money saving energy efficiency solutions
  • ZeroEnergy installation kit with the necessary components for connection to all major HVAC and water heater brands is available separately
  • Requires installation by a certified HVAC and plumbing technician

Customer Questions & Answers

I have trouble keeping my pool warm. Is it possible to connect two of these units to one heat pump?

One to heat domestic hot water and the second one would heat the pool.
Asked by: Poppa
You'd have to talk to the mfgr's rep., Olive Tree Energy, in Tampa, but I don't think one heat pump has enough "waste energy" to do both jobs. Hopefully I'm wrong.

What circulates the hot water through the ZeroEnergy unit?

I saw another unit, made by Aquefier, that uses a small water pump to circulate the water from the water heater to the Aquefier unit. How is hot water circulation achieved in the ZeroEnergy heat exchanger if there are no moving parts?
Asked by: ascottdude
Looking at the patents from Olive Tree Energy founder (https://www.google.com/patents/US9322600), it looks like a spiral heat exchanger with countercurrent flow with one line being the post compressor refrigerant and the other being the cold water from the bottom of the water heater. The compressor provides the flow for the hot refrigerant while the slight vertical angle for the heat exchanger will use a thermosyphon flow as a "pump" to draw cold water from the bottom of the water tank as the water gets warmed and rises. But this is why placement of the spiral exchanger is important to ensure flow. The video shows a solar (instead of refrigerant) heated thermosyphon pumping in action. Note: Not an employee or dealer. Just someone considering the solution for myself.

Who installs it for you? Do they come out from home depot and install this system? Can it be installed after central air is installed and hot water heater is already installed in a new home project. Can be hooked up easily by someone who knows how to do it?
Asked by: banks123
It can be installed before or after the hvac is installed. Ditto the hot water tank. However, it might be easier when everything is new. Try to locate "Ramon" at Olive Tree Energy on Nebraska (Tampa). He's The Best, and helped me do mine about 10 years ago. However, ANY competent HVAC guy can install it for you by just following the (good) directions that come with the unit. BTW, the units do everything they say they can do.

installation manual

is there a detailed install manual available?
Asked by: mike
A page out of the instruction manual is posted above. Seems kind of shady that they didn't post the whole thing. What is posted, seems rather general - with the declaration that it must be installed by a HVAC tech. I have had the kind with circulation pumps before and they work well. However, without a circulation pump, the installation will be extremely tricky. So an HVAC tech would want to buy one from his distributor. With no moving parts, it also means that there is no way to shut it off so that the water heater doesn't overheat. The basic HRU is just two parallel runs of copper tubing wound around a broom handle then slathered in heat sink compound to help conduct the heat. That said, I think they are asking way too much for an HRU with no circulating pump.
