I have used it on galvanized pipes and it works great. Just clean off all the rust you can, so you have a clean surface.

Answer:
Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer can be used on galvanized metal. It can also be used on a rusted surface; however, for best results we recommend the use of Rust-Oleum Rusty Metal Primer. Keep in mind that this product should only be used over rusted areas and not on the clean galvanization. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-1-qt-Flat-Rusty-Metal-Primer-7769502/100112883

Yes, because it preps your surface to apply paint evenly. If your surface is already in good shape and the color you want to apply is not a big difference, then I would recommend just go straight to painting.

Answer:
That depends on what your intended finish needs to be. I have used just this primer on projects and left it at that. It will leave a matte finish that is a little rough to the touch. It is best to run some 220-300 grit sandpaper over it after to smooth it out.

Answer:
Yes, Tricia. We do not recommend leaving any primers, including Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer and Sealer exposed without a top coat. Primers are very porous and if not top coated can eventually lead to peeling, chipping or chalking.

Do you really NOT have to sand a cabinet before priming with this? Has anyone ever used this without sanding ? How did it hold up?

I want to paint, with white paint, the two bathroom vanities that I recently bought that currently have the original factory, wood- stained finish and clear top-coat. They are some sort of smooth wood (not oak). I am hoping that I really don't have to even scuff sand them before using the primer, as advertised, but am leery. Has anyone ever used this over cabinets and/or furniture without sanding? How has it held up? Thanks so much for taking the time to respond!
(Also, I would love to know what kind of paint you used on top of this primer and if you recommend it.!)

This primer works great, but not knowing what type of top coat you are painting on makes it a little difficult to answer. If you don't want to sand or even scuff sand, I would recommend cleaning it with TSP first, then let your 1st coat of primer dry overnight before painting. I like using Satin or Eggshell paint on cabinets.

Answer:
Yes it will work however it might not hold up to scratches as well since you are applying over clear coat. You really ought to at least scuff the cabinets with steel wool or 220 before painting with this. You will also want to sand between coats of this and the final coats if you desire a smooth finish. This product tends to leave a slightly rough feel to it.

Yes, but if you want to stick with oil based, Zinnser makes another one called "BIN". Personally I like this water base one. I only use the "BIN" one when the wood has knots or stains that will bleed through.

I stayed away from water based primers before, but this one definitely changed my mind. Covers a lot of imperfections in aged drywall surfaces, easy to apply. I even had it perfectly cover up some wall paper glue residue (apply the first layer thin and quick to trap the glue and create a moisture barrier, then cover with a thick second layer). Probably the only downsides to this are that you will need 2 coats for best results, and it doesn't fully block tough water stains (even with multiple layers).

I have not tried it for exterior applications, and I think there are better products for that job. I like it better on drywall than PVA primer because it is thicker. I am a DIYer, not a pro. I need a little more forgivability in my finish; this and a 3/8" nap roller provide an even base for a new surface.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Had to use two coats I am painting my wooden kitchen cabinets for the first time and needed to paint a primer coat prior to painting. After my first primer coat, I wasn't satisfied with how it covered, so I sanded and did a second coat. After letting it dry, I painted (Satin) my cabinets and they look great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional! This product is the absolute best! I am an avid DIYer and Zinsser primer meets all my needs. I've refurbished end tables, dressers etc and this allowed for a very smooth finish. Folks that see the finish product think I should go in business selling the pieces

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product It deeply soaked within the Home fascia and cedar board crevices on its own. Very little effort in assisting continuous application in exposed bare wood areas. Drys excellent within an hour as manufacture states. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite Go to Primer This is our go to primer for anything. Converse drywall, raw wood, shiny surfaces, mold stains(may take two coats if large stain, clean with Concrobium Mold Control first). Prefer it over Kilz2 every time.
