Customer Questions & Answers

Do you really NOT have to sand a cabinet before priming with this? Has anyone ever used this without sanding ? How did it hold up?

I want to paint, with white paint, the two bathroom vanities that I recently bought that currently have the original factory, wood- stained finish and clear top-coat. They are some sort of smooth wood (not oak). I am hoping that I really don't have to even scuff sand them before using the primer, as advertised, but am leery. Has anyone ever used this over cabinets and/or furniture without sanding? How has it held up? Thanks so much for taking the time to respond! (Also, I would love to know what kind of paint you used on top of this primer and if you recommend it.!)

Yes, we did one section of stair railing without sanding and one section we sanded... could not tell the difference. It is still suggested, lightly. I mean lightly too, the one section I just used 180 grit and went over it without breaking a sweat.

Can this be used on galvanized metal and over rust?

Old tin needs painting on a large barn roof.
Asked by: Cat
Yes to the galvanized metal (make sure you wash it good with hot soapy water beforehand and dry it thoroughly) - as to the rust, remove as much as possible first with naval jelly, wash, dry, then apply the Zinsser's - usually 2 coats for everything to give a good foundation before the top coats.

I have used this product faithfully since the mid '90's when I first discovered it, after many fails with other products. I am an artist and do a lot of painted furniture and this has been my go-to primer for all my projects. I used to buy quart size but now I know I can depend on Zinsser's - so I don't hesitate buying gallon sizes - it surely will be used. Thank YOU Zinsser for creating the perfect primer for painting old furniture, priming canvas or priming anything that needs a sealer before the top coats. It doesn't matter if the furniture is laminate, chip board or covered in anything - I just prime it all first in one coat - then the blemishes reveal themselves and I can take care of those spots as needed. (Like when there is grease or sticker residue or something on the surface that shows up after the first coat.) I can then take care of the grease or what have you and recoat again. Thanks again for all you do to ensure our success.

I have not tried it for exterior applications, and I think there are better products for that job. I like it better on drywall than PVA primer because it is thicker. I am a DIYer, not a pro. I need a little more forgivability in my finish; this and a 3/8" nap roller provide an even base for a new surface.

Have not used any other primer so am rating this produce as average. My experience is that it does not cover stains, such as water marks on ceiling, with a single or two coats. I will look for a different product to cover stains on wallboard or painted walls.

On the advise of my contractor friend,I applied this primer on 35 year old laminated cabinets after a very light sanding. After drying 2 days I applied the paint and all seems to be good. But, it has only been a few days so we will wait and see how it holds up in time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional! This product is the absolute best! I am an avid DIYer and Zinsser primer meets all my needs. I've refurbished end tables, dressers etc and this allowed for a very smooth finish. Folks that see the finish product think I should go in business selling the pieces

It covers really well on both sanded and laminate surfaces with two light coats or one thick coat of paint. We used it as a primer for our kitchen cabinets and some doors and so far everything is looking really good! id buy it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lived up to expectations The can is still sitting on my floor and I haven't done anything with it. My wife is incessantly complaining about the fact I haven't completed the project even though I have all of the materials. I would say this product has exceded my expectations.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nope not for me Very disappointed in this product. Put this on 1965 stained wood work in our cottage. It then took 4 coats of paint to cover the wood work. Wasted a whole weekend on one room. Never buying this again.
