I have used it on galvanized pipes and it works great. Just clean off all the rust you can, so you have a clean surface.

Answer:
Zinsser Bullseye 1-2-3 Water-Based Primer can be used on galvanized metal. It can also be used on a rusted surface; however, for best results we recommend the use of Rust-Oleum Rusty Metal Primer. Keep in mind that this product should only be used over rusted areas and not on the clean galvanization. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Stops-Rust-1-qt-Flat-Rusty-Metal-Primer-7769502/100112883

Yes, because it preps your surface to apply paint evenly. If your surface is already in good shape and the color you want to apply is not a big difference, then I would recommend just go straight to painting.

Answer:
That depends on what your intended finish needs to be. I have used just this primer on projects and left it at that. It will leave a matte finish that is a little rough to the touch. It is best to run some 220-300 grit sandpaper over it after to smooth it out.

Answer:
Yes, Tricia. We do not recommend leaving any primers, including Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer and Sealer exposed without a top coat. Primers are very porous and if not top coated can eventually lead to peeling, chipping or chalking.

Do you really NOT have to sand a cabinet before priming with this? Has anyone ever used this without sanding ? How did it hold up?

I want to paint, with white paint, the two bathroom vanities that I recently bought that currently have the original factory, wood- stained finish and clear top-coat. They are some sort of smooth wood (not oak). I am hoping that I really don't have to even scuff sand them before using the primer, as advertised, but am leery. Has anyone ever used this over cabinets and/or furniture without sanding? How has it held up? Thanks so much for taking the time to respond!
(Also, I would love to know what kind of paint you used on top of this primer and if you recommend it.!)

Answer:
This primer works great, but not knowing what type of top coat you are painting on makes it a little difficult to answer. If you don't want to sand or even scuff sand, I would recommend cleaning it with TSP first, then let your 1st coat of primer dry overnight before painting. I like using Satin or Eggshell paint on cabinets.

Answer:
Yes it will work however it might not hold up to scratches as well since you are applying over clear coat. You really ought to at least scuff the cabinets with steel wool or 220 before painting with this. You will also want to sand between coats of this and the final coats if you desire a smooth finish. This product tends to leave a slightly rough feel to it.

Answer:
Yes, but if you want to stick with oil based, Zinnser makes another one called "BIN". Personally I like this water base one. I only use the "BIN" one when the wood has knots or stains that will bleed through.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Love this stuff. Covers way better than the other primers Its awesome for brush on and roll on but the sprayer wants to clump it pretty bad. June 14, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by This is a very good all purpose primer. I stayed away from water based primers before, but this one definitely changed my mind. Covers a lot of imperfections in aged drywall surfaces, easy to apply. I even had it perfectly cover up some wall paper glue residue (apply the first layer thin and quick to trap the glue and create a moisture barrier, then cover with a thick second layer). Probably the only downsides to this are that you will need 2 coats for best results, and it doesn't fully block tough water stains (even with multiple layers). October 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Stuff I have been using Bulls Eye 1-2-3- primer for years on my rehab properties. It does a superior job for me. October 18, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Primer Poor quality. Took longer time to dry, was not as thick, yet did not brush on well as i am used to with other brands. Will be returning it. October 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good for wood I have used this on all woodwork projects before paint. Seals well and cleans up easily. Great primer !!! October 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by THE best primer 1-2-3 is my go to primer, way better than Killz or other brands. I have used it to cover walls painted bright red and deep olive. This time, my condo hall closet was full of black rubber scuff marks up and down the walls (from the previous owners). I figured two coats of primer at least. 1-2-3 covered in one coat plus a few touch up spots. I was able to paint over it with one additional coat of white paint and it looks like new. March 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love this stuff Only primer I use! It consistently performs great. September 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by my go-to primer Allows me stress free coverage of bold colors I'd like to disappear from the wall. September 13, 2016
