I have wood beams going across the ceiling in my home. The previous owner painted them, now I want to stain them back to look like the original wood. Can I use this product over the paint, then stain?

Answer:
We do not recommend staining a primed surface. Zinsser Cover Stain Primer and Sealer is designed to be top coated with paint. Most stains require bare wood in order to properly adhere to the surface.

Answer:
Zinsser Cover Stain Primer and Sealer may be tinted to off-white and pastel shades by adding no more than 2 oz. of universal colorant per gallon. Tinting the primer towards the topcoat improves the hiding power of the topcoat.

My condo's kitchen & bath have melamine cabinets with faux wood trim that I want to paint. I've seen other owners who recently sold their unit paint theirs, but they're not around to ask what they used. Do you recommend a light sanding first?

Answer:
Yes, it does! Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Primer is designed to stick to all surfaces. Sanding the surface prior to application of Coverstain is not required. We recommend cleaning with an ammonia and water solution to prepare your surfaces.

Customer Reviews

Rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome for cabinetry! The best primer for cabinetry is any Zinsser product. This went on buttery smooth with no brush strokes after we did our prep work. Highly recommended. July 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Primer/Sealer for cat urine & cigarette smoke I've used Zinsser Bin Oil-based primer on 2 separate occassions and both times it has performed beautifully!! The first was a complete remodel of a 2500 sq ft house that had about 9 cats living there. We had to cut out some of the subfloor it was so badly saturated with cat urine. However, we coated the baseboards, walls and pretty much everything else with 2 coats of oil-based zinsser (1 coat probably would have done the trick, but we wanted to make sure the smell was gone). No more cat urine smell - it was amazing. The other occassion was repainting several rooms in a home that was occupied by a heavy smoker (ie. heavy deposits on the walls). We tried to clean the gunk off the walls the best we could with several cleaners because we didn't believe that zinsser would seal it and it would bleed through. However, much to our amazement, 1 coat of zinsser sealed it right up and we painted over it and the smoke smell was gone too. I would use Kilz 2 for basic priming/sealing but if you need a really good sealant - zinsser bin is the way to go! February 3, 2010
