Happy to help Bob. Both primers are a great option for sealing knotty pine surfaces. As the original, shellac-base primer-sealer, nothing is better at permanently blocking stains, odors and wood knots than Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Shellac- Base Primer. Please keep in mind B-I-N is for interior use and small spot priming in exterior use. If your surfaces are outside you will want to use Rust-Oleum Cover Read More

Kate, we do not recommend using Zinsser Cover Stain for a subfloor. This product is not designed to withstand the wear and tear of foot traffic, even if applied underneath another flooring surface. Instead, use Zinsser B-I-N Primer and Sealer. This product is excellent for sealing odors and will withstand floor applications. Read More

Answer:
In most cases Cover-Stain will dry to the touch in 30 minutes and can be recoated after 1 hour. The dry primer film develops full adhesion in 7 days. Lower temperatures, higher humidity and the addition of tint will prolong the dry and cure time.

1 gal. White Cover Stain Interior/Exterior Primer and Sealer (Case of 4) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gets the Job Done! I needed to repaint a concrete bird bath or either throw it away. It hadn't been painted in almost 20 years. I really wasn't sure what I would need; however, an employee made sure I got everything to get the job done. I was surprised to know that I didn't have to buy a primer and sealer separately. Then we chose the correct type of paint and paint brush. Everything went on smoothly and now the bird bath looks like a new one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Primer over varnished trim I bought the Primer that said "bond coat". I needed to paint over glossy varnished trim and this oil based primer worked great. I didn't want to make a mess sanding the trim so this was either going to work or I was replacing it with lower quality MDF trim. It worked fine and I painted with a glossy ultra white latex. Hope this helps someone doing he same project I did.

Needed to cover semi-gloss oil based trim paint and this primer is wonderful! Every how-to review i found said it had to be sanded and then primed before it could be repainted with laytex. This product eliminated the need for sanding - what a mess and time saver! Couldn't be more pleased!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I needed something to cover the stain on some wood in order to paint the wood and no other primer... I needed something to cover the stain on some wood in order to paint the wood and no other primer worked as the stain would bleed through everything else except Zinsser Cover Stain Primer. Best part about it is that it is a thin primer and a gallon of this stuff covered my whole living room and dining area. The fumes from it are horrendous so make sure you open your windows. Also, cover everything up because you get this stuff on anything, its staying on there. This primer is strong and gets the job done better than any other primer I used for stained wood. Its a bit pricey but if its the only thing that works, I'm all for it. I recommend this product for any stain you have to cover.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The pigmented wood sealer off the shelf No matter what what top coat you are using, this is the best exterior/interior wood sealer for general painting, that is off the shelf and, on the market today. If you need to seal interior wallboard as a surface vapor barrier, this product is the best value. Cuts in nice, rolls best with 3/8s nap or less and, dries very fast. You do require ventilation if used on the interior. It may be tinted as well.... On wall surfaces, it is best to keep a wet edge. As for sealing knot stains, it does an 80% job. Pigmented shellac is the only true knot sealer there is.....
