Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be used over latex paint if so waxed or mom waxed

Asked by: Tluvly00
Yes, Zinsser Shellac Traditional Finish and Sealer can be applied over latex paint. We strongly recommend applying a test application in a small inconspicuous spot on previously finished surfaces to ensure compatibility and adhesion of the products. This test application is especially recommended on light paint colors to ensure the desired appearance before application to the entire surface. Be sure the surface is clean of any contaminants, such as wax, before applying the Shellac.

Can I use this with saw dust to fill in a wood floor

Asked by: Frank
Happy to clear things up, Frank! We do not recommend adding anything to Rust-Oleum Zinsser Shellac Traditional Finish and Sealer since it can affect the product's performance and drying.

To cover cedar how many coats are needed and if more than one should I lightly sand in between coats?

Asked by: Neenee
Happy to help. Apply 1 or more light coats of Zinsser Shellac Traditional Finish and Sealer. Several light coats work best when applied with a brush, pad or lint-free wiping cloth and let dry for 1 hour before sanding with 220 grit or finer sandpaper.

After waiting around 12 hours for my first coat of polyurethane to dry I had to find something else as my customer would be picking up in 8 hours. It adhered great to the poly. I used my HVLP gun to spray it and it required no thinning. I did however thin the next 3 coats 50/50 with denatured alcohol which worked great. Very little mess, no odor, dries fast, sands easy (400 grit) for a smooth finish, and i didn't get a lot of over spray mess like I do with lacquer. I think this is my new go-to finish for furniture projects.
