Customer Questions & Answers

Can I used this on previously stained/finished wood trim? If so, do I need to sand it first? Can it be used as a final topcoat? Thanks!

Asked by: needafloor
You can use clear shellac over previously finished wood trim. And it can be used as a final top coat. In most cases you do not need to sand first but you may want to if the trim needs to be cleaned up. aware that shellac will not withstand water very well and it is not as durable as some other finishes. But it will look good in a place where it won't get wet or wear.

Does the clear contain wax.jacke

Asked by: JackW
Zinsser clear shellac contains a small amount of wax but not enough to be a problem. You hear a lot about using dewaxed shellac under other finishes. I've done a lot of reading and a lot of experimenting myself over several years and my opinion is that it's not necessary. I use clear shellac under paint, polyurethane and lacquer. If I am going to apply an oil finish I generally do not use shellac or I dilute the shellac with denatured alcohol first.

Clear shellac will seal just like shellac based primer.

I'm looking for a redwood stain for a deck... how much do it cost for a 5 gal bucket

Asked by: Pop
It sounds to us like Wolman F&P Finish and Preservative in a redwood finish is just what you are looking for. This deep-penetrating, tinted oil brings out wood’s natural grain while also providing long-term water, UV, and mold/mildew protection. The cost for a 5-gallon bucket is $129.97. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Wolman-5-gal-F-P-Redwood-Exterior-Wood-Stain-Finish-and-Preservative-14405/204642356

I purchased this shellac to finish and protect tool handles such as handsaws and planes. I applied 3 coats which appears to provide good protection for the handles. I was instructed at HD to use paint thinner for cleanup but paint thinner is definitely not the correct cleanup product because it simply jelled and gummed up the shellac on my applicator. I'm sure glad I didn't purchase the $13 natural bristle brush since I had to discard my applicator after the first use. Each additional cost seemed to melt into previous coats. This shellac dries extremely fast, especially the first coats allowing the application of additional costs quickly. This shellac did a nice job on my tool handles and would likely be a good finish for larger items.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solution for latex paint woes We painted a wooden desk with black latex paint and we got the inevitable blocking that caused the paint to remain sticky and feeling like it never dried. I added two coats of the shellac and problem was gone. Rock solid semi clear finish and it is dry as can be. Nothing sticks at all anymore and it can even be wiped down with a damp cloth. I highly recommend this product!

This product works very well. As with all products - read and follow label directions for best results. I prefer to do multiple thin coats, sanding with anywhere from 400 to 800 in between.

I’ve never seen any other brand of shellac other than Bulls Eye but they have not changed an excellent product. I use it a lot for sealing end grain on exterior wood, this reduces checking and end rot.

Easy to apply/clean-up, good flow-out, fairly high gloss, very quick dry times as is typical for shellacs. Tendency to run not tested. It's also wax-free, so you can apply any top coat if you so desire, although the instructions don't recommend polyurethanes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shellac Worked great for sealing old wood I was painting. There was a yellow/brownish color coming through the white paint. After 1 quick coat of this shellac, there was no more discoloration and it looked great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sealant For Marine Purposes Used this to seal plywood used in a boat. Works great and is a tiny fraction of the cost for Marine paint or sealant. It also can be painted after its dry (which only takes about 30min)!
