I use this 2-lb. cut product as a stain sealer, humidity barrier and occasionally as a stand-alone finish. It is compatible with all topcoats I use, including water-based. Due to its fast cure time, I usually spray it on. Despite comments from another user, the fast drying is a real advantage, as it allows multiple coats to be applied quickly. Be aware that shellac isn't super-durable as a topcoat, and is subject to white blush when exposed to water. However, it repairs easily. For people who understand how to use it, it works very well. It's surprisingly expensive, but far more convenient than mixing a batch of shellac from flakes for each project.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Bob1234 My 'go to' universal finish for wood working projects
The questions concerning the 'right' finish for wood workers are a bit of a mine field but, in my limited experience, I find shellac fulfills many of my needs. And, in the multitude of shellac products (e.g. waxed vis non-wax, use of flakes, etc), I have found Zinsser Sealcoat is, for most of my work, to be an excellent choice. I usually cut it down a bit and keep some in a easy access container and use for virtually every thing in wood - from simple wood working jigs to complete projects. Shellac is, IMHO, a nice finish and Sealcoat is certainly one of the better choices in the shellac field.

I've done finishing for a long time and I tried this instead of Minwax and found that this sets up real FAST. It left streaks, spots, dots and hard to make it look good. Need to do extensive sanding after applying it. Going to see if I can return it and hope it hasn't ruined my project. Fumes very strong.
