Answer:
That's a great question, Susan. Zinsser Peel Stop is a water-based binding primer locks down and hides peeling, weathered surfaces, creating a smooth finish for your top coat. Although you can use it over previously painted surface, it's typically not the intended use for the product. If you have stains that you are trying to cover up, our suggestion is to use the Zinsser Cover Stain.

Answer:
Great question. In general, once the coating is dry enough for recoating, in this instance in one hour, it can be sanded. To ensure Zinsser Cover Stain Primer is ready for sanding we recommend waiting a few hours.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 8 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked perfectly on my trim! I covered my 1990s honey colored trim. I sanded the poly down and applied 2 coats. Worked great! April 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I needed I needed to paint a laminate bookcase, and choosing the right primer was key. I looked online and found multiple people rated this primer as their "go to" for these kinds of projects. I searched online and found that Home Depot had a better price AND it was available for pickup at the local store. The product was perfect for laminate furniture; it's very sticky and clings to any material. Because it's oil based, it dries quickly and was really easy to get on. My only issue was I forgot it was oil based and attempted to wash my roller in my tub; as soon as I put it under the water, I knew that was a dumb idea. I had stains on my finger nails for a couple days. I live in a small New York apartment and painted the bookcase inside with a few fans on, my window AC on in one room, and a couple windows open in others. The smell was fine (nothing like the spray paint I used for another project), and the whole project took only a few hours from the time I started priming to the time I reassembled the bookcase (I painted 1.5" white and yellow alternating vertical stripes only on the back panel). It took longer for the actual paint to dry. I will definitely continue to use this primer when I want to update my laminate furniture or work with other difficult materials, and highly recommend it. A little goes a long way and it will save you time and money in the long run. August 12, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by As good as BIN for less $$$ Sprayed a couple pairs of louver doors that had yellowed & tannin bleed through after 20 Yrs. This paint lays down perfect, hides well & dries Fast. I read that B.M.'s. "Advance" water-borne Alkyd was not compatible with it but I had no problems. Using a HVLP & a 1.3 cap set I just had to reduce the paint a small Ammt. with thinner. I spent more time cleaning my spray-gun after using the Advance than I did the Zinsser, which went fast. Cover stain costs almost 50% less than the shellac & seems to perform as well. I'm glad I tried it. October 25, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice primer for spraying I used this for the first time on an old dresser redo. This sealed everything up nicely including the rough sides to the drawers. I had to sand afterward but the surface is sooooo silky smooth. I used 220 paper and sanded very lightly, just to knock off overspray. Exquisite! I can not wait to put paint on this. It should lay out nice and flat and beautiful! I used this outside with a gravity fed gun and air compressor, I could smell the fumes through my respirator (not NIHOSH, I would like to get one specifically for this). This primer sands wonderfully after a couple of hours to a nice powdery finish, no gumming up and it feels VERY hard and not tacky at all like a latex primer. Also, after first coat of primer I filled all dings and scratches with drywall compound sanded flat and coated a second time with this primer. Provided a very nice finish and is nice and hard, should be very durable. This will be a dresser in a little girls room so will take some abuse. On the downside, clean up is not as easy as water based primer but I think it is worth it. August 9, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by the worst product ever for exterior it says that the oil primmer is for exterior..on 3 different occasions i used the oil primmer for exterior wood siding. i scraped, washed everything and when it was good and dry used this primmer..within 1 year everything was crackling alligatord and peeling..i will never use cover stain again. i had to power sand a whole exterior of a house because i used this product..and i had to do it for free..if you need a good exterior oil primmer, sherwin williams has a good one..i highly recommend never use cover stain for exterior work.. i learned the hard way and it cost my a lot December 22, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A truly great product Renovating pro for 43 years, this is the very best primer around. Although latex has come a long way it just can't match the tenacity and finish of this stuff. Years ago we had a similar product called enamel under coater but this is better because it dries so fast. On new wood, on drywall under tile as a sealer, anywhere you really need it to work and for outside use "peel stop" also by zinseer. Way better than conventional primers. September 30, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best primer ever! I recently used this product to prime an old hutch that I am painting. I didn't want to have to sand it since there was a lot of details. I read on several reviews that this would be a great product to use in place of sanding and they were right! It went on great and wasn't drippy! I've used other primers that have been messy and drippy. I got a little bit on my hand but it came off very easily. It also doesn't have a strong oder which is great. I will definitely use this one again! September 15, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for priming stained mouldings prior to painting I used this to prime all of the stained wood mouldings (and window frames) prior to painting them. There was no need to sand which is the reason why I went with this primer. I used a latex topcoat and the results look great. Saved me a ton of money by not having to replace all of the mouldings. It is oil based so make sure you are prepared to do a thorough brush cleaning with paint thinner. November 19, 2013
