Customer Questions & Answers

Can this shellac spray be used for wood cutting boards?

Can the brush on shellac be used for a cutting board?
Asked by: Ryan
I do not recommenced shellac to coat cutting boards that will be used. There is an oil sold specifically for cutting boards. If you have a collection of cutting boards for show then I would use the shellac to coat them.

Is this edible

Asked by: Jen
Not edible but not harmful. Once dried if it is ingested it would depend on the amount ingested and what was eaten that it was on. Understand that shellac, food grade shellac, is edible. You eat it every time you take a pill coated to pass through the stomach and enter the digestive tract. If you are worried about a baby chewing the rail on a crib or a puppy chewing wood with shellac on it worry more about what the shellac is on.

Can this be applied over an oil based finish? Or should the oil finish go on top of the Shellac? I want to use a Teak oil finish to protect a project from fading in sunlight. I don't want to only use the oil finish as I understand this will require many, many coats and significant drying time.
Asked by: jeff
If the oil was applied properly, meaning that it was wiped dry and cured for a period of time, it would be good to shellac over the oil. However, if the oil coating contains mineral oil or silicone oil or any other non drying oils you have used the wrong oil coating and probably would not want to coat it again.

Can this be used to coat the outside of a wine glass, so it doesn't touch the wine but might touch someone's lips

Asked by: Impy
The alcohol in the wine and washing the glasses would not do the shellac well. It will not be harmful to skin, most skin. something is harmful or an irritant to someone.

None of them sprayed an even finish. The shellac is not atomized enough resulting in a rough, pebbly surface. I've tried progressively wetter and wetter coats even to the point of running, but it would not lay out. If you need to cover a patch of something as a barrier coat, it's probably okay. If you are trying to apply a topcoat, it's awful. Other reviewers seem happy. I wish I knew how they were achieving it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy and shiny finish Used it to seal the paint and vinyl on some signs I made for Wreaths. It leaves a shiny smooth surface and doesn't bubble up. I'm very pleased so far. We'll see how they hold up in Louisiana Weather.
