Answer:
Yes, Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Base Primer may be tinted with up to 2 ounces of universal colorant per gallon. Tinting the primer toward the color of the topcoat helps hide in one coat. Please be aware, the addition of universal colorant may prolong the dry time of this product.

We did this before reading the instructions on your product. Your instructions say to NOT paint over TSP. Who's right and why?

Answer:
We do not recommend using TSP for cleaning prior to priming with Rust-Oleum Zinsser B-I-N Primer and Sealer because TSP can leave behind a chalky residue which can interfere with adhesion of a primer/paint if not thoroughly rinsed. We recommend cleaning the surface with a dilute household ammonia and water solution (1 cup ammonia to 1 gallon of water)

5 gal. B-I-N Shellac-Based White Interior/Spot Exterior Primer and Sealer is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from It depends My home was heavily smoked in before I got it. Ever wall was cleaned before I put the primer on. Despite cleaning the walls, there were heavy stains. Most of the time one coat did the trick. On the ceiling it was a little harder. I am not an experienced painter at all, so two coats worked better. Then two coats of actual paint, and it's great. However, we have what I call the "stinky closet". I have tried vina German, baking soda, sented items, to no avail. Still smells horrible. Put 3 coats on so far of primer, and it has been cut by 3/4. I anticipate at least 2 more Coats to finish the job. Was hoping for just two Coats, rather than 5. The smell? My best guess is that Coats were bathed in cigarettes, and left in the closet to marinate. Works well the first time *most* of the time. Very soupy. Ventilate your area well! Oh, and if you let it sit for 6 years, it will still be good if you go get it shook up.

I bought this to seal the outside of my house to seal in original degraded lead paint. When I opened the product, I was surprised because the stuff was as thin as buttermilk. I thought to myself, "This stuff must've been a return that someone cut, it'll never cover anything." But I took a brush and tried it, and the stuff covered very well on just the first pass. It also dries very fast, so any areas that didn't cover in the first stroke usually totally covered in the second. I mean, solid. This stuff dries nice and hard, and, from what I've read, should outlast anything else. The downside is that, despite it being so thin, they can't really guarantee that any tint, should you choose to do so, will only be a very light tint, because y ou can only put two ounces of tint per five gallons. In the end, I chose not to tint. My finish coat, Behr, went on in a single coat, and looks fantastic! It's very messy, though. It splashes a lot, so you really have to make sure you're tarped up. And make sure it's plastic, because this stuff penetrates material rapidly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, goes fast Its expensive, no doubt, but this is the best stuff. I work at a top paint company, and the chemist I work with even recommended this primer over anything we make. Anyways, renovating my house, previous owner smoked heavily. This applies/rolls very easy, it is pretty thin even after mixed, try not to apply to heavily, instead go over with a second coat. Will be buying more of this

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Goodbye cigarette odors and stains! Like the title says, this stuff works for cigarettes stains and odors. And not "pretty much works" or "masks it for a while", but it really will completely hide and seal cigarette pollution on walls. I bought a house that had been heavily smoked in for a long time and I didn't realize it until the brand new paint that the remodelers/sellers used had dried out. Thank heavens for this amazing primer. This has changed our home back into its original condition. It's night and day. The price is high but so very worth it. Be aware it needs a very thorough shaking and is runny and noxious. Wear a chemical mask (the small, white face masks for dust will NOT work) and safety goggles. Buy quality brushes or rollers meant for oil based paints. It thins with ammonia which is quite cheap, so another plus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome odor control Rescued a cat that proceeded to mark every baseboard and wall in our house when we left. He was old and mentally gone. After sending him yo great beyond, I had to remove and throw away about 2000 square feet of carpet and hardwood after my wife tried every position send natural remedy. I parked every wall up two feet including the baseboards and the subfloor. Smell gone! Locked in! Top coated with oil based porch paint until we can agree on new flooring. Our other cat doesn't see, to mind the new floors and the absence of his friends smell either.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST SEALER BY FAR THIS IS THE BEST SEALER PRODUCT. ALTHOUGH IT IS EXPENSIVE, IT GOES MUCH FURTHER AND SEALS STAINS IN ONE COAT THAT WATER BASE STUFF JUST CAN'T TACKLE IN MULIPLE APPLICATIONS. WHEN GOING OVER OLD OIL BASE ENAMEL PAINT, THIS IS THE ONLY VIABLE OPTION WITHOUT HAVING TO SAND THE SURFACE........

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not for heavy water stains This was recommended by an associate in the paint section at HD. This product did not come close to covering up the water stains or eliminating the smoke odors in our garage. The consistency was extremely watered down! I would not recommend this product if you're trying to eliminate heavy water stains or smoke odors!!!
