Easily locates metal pipes, wiring, and embedded nails in wood. Audio beep is loud enough and the blue sensor light is bright. The only shortcoming is the difficult-to-remove battery cover. The scanner is more efficient than simply using the metal sensor mode on a stud finder.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Barry Great new device
I have a couple of different stud finders but I still end up tapping the wall with my knuckles and drilling exploratory holes to figure out where things are. This device is nice because it locates metal in the wall whether it is nails or piping. You can do a wide area scan first and then zoom in and do a pinpoint scan. I think this is going to be a very useful addition to my tool set. It is also a nicely designed device that looks good.
On the negative side I found the battery cover difficult to get off and also I would prefer it took AA batteries rather than 9V smoke detector type batteries. I have a drawer full of AA’s.

This is a good, basic, and accurate metal locator, able to detect metal through dry wall, stucco, and more. It is accurate in its scanning or pinpointing (if greater accuracy is desired). I would recommend that it could use a sensitivity gauge. You may find that it can detect metal too easily at too broad a range, and so having the pinpoint option is good though. Do use fresh batteries,as partially used ones can show misleading indicators (I used one 9-volt battery that had half a charge, and it was misleading). Also the panel to the battery is a little hard to find as I discovered it is not through unscrewing the 5/64" hex screw. I should have read the instructions before tinkering. Also to note, this panel can also be a little hard to pull off (make sure you push down at the top seam before pulling down).

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by DIYman Nail Detector for Used Lumber
This is a simple tool for locating metallic items. I purchased it to scan used lumber to avoid damage to blades and bits.
In using it, it is essential to "calibrate" it in free space away from any metallic objects. So far, it has worked well in this application. I suspect there are better detectors out there with more range, but this one is readily available and reasonable cost.
One annoying feature is the need to hold the button down to activate it. For scanning lumber, I'd like to calibrate it and then leave it on, resting on bench while I position the lumber. If you let up on the button, then it's back to calibrating. The thumb gets fatigued trying to hold it down continuously.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by fxp1 Really easy to operate
The Zircon Metalliscanner M40 Metal Locator tool is a better way to find studs over other devices I've used. When I received the unit found it to be a good size to hold in your hand. It needs a 9-volt battery not included that is stored in the handle. I found it to be easy to use after first going over the instructions and watching the video on the Home Depot product page. There are also more calibrating videos on YouTube. Basically, calibrate it by turning it on and waiting for the ready light to go on next to the search area. Then slowly move it along the wall until the Christmas tree line on the head starts to light up indicating sensitively strength and sounds a tone for maximum strength. There are more steps to hone the metal search, but that's basically it. I expected it not to be that easy, but not with this one. If anything it was super sensitive in finding metal pipes, electrical cables and of course, wall studs. I've used other devices and there is a learning curve to interpret results, this tool is up and running much faster.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by JerryP Best stud finder for the money hands down!
If you can not find studs with this thing you should not be messing with your home period. I have used more then a few stud finders and this one has been the best one yet.
I am finding the studs with much more speed and precision then ever before.
If you can not find a stud with this tool you should not be messing around with your home period.
First you will need a 9 volt battery. Second you do not need to unscrew the screw to put the battery in. Just slide down the black plastic part on the bottom half.
I can not believe I waited this long to replace my old stud finder. This can be read from above or below as it has lights on both the top and bottom of this finder.

I used this to find studs (nails) under my carpet to stop squeeks. Worked excellent (Used #8 2" Deckmate- Screws went right thru the rug). Also found studs (actually the nails) behind .75" plaster on the walls. Change the included 9v battery after using it for a while.
