I was expecting a high quality oak mantel ready for installation after staining, just as the description says.
What arrived was a quickly assembled piece with little quality control that has numerous large areas where sanding filler was used and a top shelf oak board that had been run through the planer too fast.
The instructions are small print and one sheet. It's fine if you have built an item like this before with it's base, but if you are newer to DIY, it is lacking the details you'll want.
To be honest, it has the quality of a high school project. It isn't a piece of junk, but the factory obviously isn't inspecting these closely before they are packed and shipped. Since this is sold as a ready to stain and install mantel, I have to say it misses the mark by a good bit.
Not only are there large gaps (one was nearly 1/4") in the trim along the top shelf filled with a bright pink filler, the entire top of the mantel has chatter marks from being run through the planer too fast. All of this shows up much more when stained of course. There should be no gaps in the trim at all. It's easy to pick out proper mouldings and assemble them square. This shouldn't be happening.
Had this been a model sold to be painted, it would be fine. You'd never see all the defects. Being sold as a ready to stain model, it has too many obvious defects to be a show piece for a stain or lacquer.
The wood itself is very nice and high quality. Very few if any flaws in the boards and moulding. It just wasn't treated very well during assembly.
I'm surprised that the company let something like this get out of the plant. I wouldn't be able to recommend this mantel to a friend if they don't fix the assembly and wood prep issues.

The website was easy to navigate and purchasing the mantle was an easy process. The item arrived to my home on time and unharmed. The product beautifully made with high quality wood that had beautiful grain markings. I stained it with products I purchased at Home Depot and the end result was immaculate! No complaints

This mantle kit is of solid American oak wood. The top shelf is glue laminated oak boards 3/8" thick and 6'x8". The trim edging is all solid oak too. There is small areas with glue and sanding sealer visible. I sanded with 150 grit for about an hour and worked on the glue and sealer until mostly gone. I applied three coats of clear gloss polyurathane. The shelf looks great and is heavy looking. Installation instructions are adequate. I attached the 2x2 strip to 3 studs with 3" screws and used small 1.5" tan screws countersunk along the back edge. I did not like the recommended glue to the wall idea although it would be strong and permanent. My project looks of the quality I would have spent two days sawing out the numerous angled pieces. There are now 3 antique clocks on the mantle.

Really quality, right out of the box. Fit and finish were excellent. Used Minwax tung oil to finish (no stain) matches our new Pergo Presto Victoria Maple flooring. Mounted in our living room for family picture display. Used 1/4 X 2 1/2" lag screws (3) thru mounting cleat into wall studs. (not supplied) used PL Premium construction adhesieve to mount mantel to wood cleat. Looks super on our beige colored wall; makes the room.

This mantel is a good-looking mantel, but be prepared to put in some elbow grease getting it ready - There were some rough spots that needed to be sanded before we could stain it. We used a dark mahogany stain, and it is beautiful. I would recommend this with minor caution, because quality control could be better. Once it is finished, though, it is a very nice piece.
