I needed to drill some holes in a concrete slab, so did a little research. This particular Dewalt VSR hammer drill got excellent reviews, and I've rarely gone wrong by following them, so I bought one. The first hole took forever and the bit was completely trashed, so I took the bit back. Turns out it was the wrong kind for what I was doing (guess I should have asked for help...), and the HD employee helped me get the right one. I took that one home and finished all the holes in about 20 minutes! The drill itself performed perfectly, although it did get quite hot....hence the 4 stars instead of 5.

I have two Dewalt DW511 hammer drills.I got this one on sale for $80 at the HD in Melbourne,FL.I am a contractor and I use it mostly for drilling 5/32" and 3/16" holes through concrete slabs ,bricks and block walls (5-10 holes or so at a time) for installing tap cons to anchor wood studs. This drill is great for this task.Occasionally I have used it for drilling up to 1/2" holes through concrete and it did well, but I took my time.It is a small drill and has it's limitations. It's not my $500 Bosch combination hammer drill ,which can drill 1/2" and up holes in concrete slabs all day, quickly without breaking a sweat. All in all,the Dewalt DW511 is a great inexpensive hammer drill for small jobs.If you are looking to drill many 1/2" or larger holes into hard concrete slabs quickly, you will burn this hammer drill out quickly. It is not made for that.Use the right tool for the job.

Very easy to operate.
Went through brick wall like butter with proper tapcon bit.
Has a cord which I wanted for consistent power.

I'm an electrical technician and I use my tools on a daily basis. I used this drill on a couple rough ins and it did great! It drove 1" and 3/4" auger bits with out any problem! The problem started when I was using the hammer drill setting. I had to go through a 8" poured cinder block wall. I piloted the hole with an 3/8" bit and then went with the 3/4", because thats what I need to get my wire through. The next hole I did the same thing, except this time when i went through with the 3/4", all of the gears stripped out and was rendered completely useless. This is a great drill but, you can't expect to drill in to concrete with any thing larger than a 1/2" masonry bit.

Rated 4 out of 5Â by drjohn Very good hammer drill for the price
I have used this drill for several small home projects during the past year. It performed very well in all of them. The most challenging was a 1 inch hole in a 5 inch concrete slab. Ergonomics are good. Depth gauge is handy. The drill gets hot but did not fail. The one problem I have encountered is the chuck. No matter how much I tighten it, large bits have worked loose. It's very frustrating to have that happen in tight spaces or with the bit deep in a hole, but it's not a fatal flaw.
