Cheap. Easy to use. Comes with a couple different tips. For a light duty soldering iron it isn't bad. If you need a light duty iron, buy this. If you need something for medium or heavy duty, buy something better.

This review concerns the Weller 40-Watt Soldering Iron Kit, Model # SP40LK.
Bought the first 40 watt kit, from my local store, 2 days ago. Prepped my cables and started assembling. Soldering assembly took about 30 minutes. Turned the soldering iron off to prep some more cables. About an hour later I turned the iron back on. The power light came on, but the iron didn't heat. Tried again later that evening and got the same results...'power on' light lit, but no heat.
Yesterday I took it back and exchanged it for the same model. Maybe the first was defective...it happens, no problem. Worked with this second iron for about 30 minutes again, shut it off, did more prep work. Moment of truth time...turned it on...it heated again! Yay! However, about 20 minutes into the second soldering session, i noticed the tip eroding away. I was using the largest flat tip from the kit, and a crescent moon shape was forming across the tip. I finished up some more work and the tip had eroded so much more that the tip looked like two prongs.
Returned it to the store yesterday and recieved my money back.
Weller is a name brand that was good and trusted at one time. Looking around the web, people are noticing a degradation of quality in the Weller brand.
This is a good price for this Weller 40W soldering kit, but you're gambling if you buy it, in my opinion, as obviously, it is working well for others.

I was using a 25 watt iron but moved up to this 40 watt model because the weaker unit wasn't hot enough. The extra power makes short work out of soldering jobs for 12 and 14 gauge wire. I also switched from lead free solder to leaded solder and my solder joints look more professional. This unit is a good low cost option for occasional use. I could not find any Weller replacement tips in the store and had to order them from an online vendor.

This soldering iron works great for both soldering and wood burning. The problem is that it only lasted for 2 months until it just stopped heating up. I brought it back to the store with the receipt and had no problems getting a full refund. I might get another one, but the quality is very iffy.
