I bough this planer primarily to shave a door to fit. It has performed great - was able to cut cleanly and didn't have to sand the door after. Was particularly impressed with the dust catchment filter - I didn't have to use the vacuum when I was finished! I'd say it caught above 95% of dust produced.
If there was anything I didn't like, it would be the residue the blade protection tape left on the base of the planer - other than that, it performed well. Haven't tested all the battery life with this unit.
Not 5 out of 5 'cuz I generally don't give that rating.

I have found Ryobi 18-volt battery tools to be hit and miss, but this one's a hit. Not for the sophisticated craftsman cabinet maker but to plane a door or a workpiece clean and smooth, go for it. Mine was a liquidation deal at $20 (without battery), making it even better.

Awesome pc of equipment! After using a handplaner for years I would not even attempt to install a door without having access to this little unit! Highly recommended!!

If you work on or with. interior, exterior wood doors or wood gates, this baby is a real time saver. I use to break out the belt sander for plaining but, it was never accurate and was hard to maintain a semi squared edge, not to mention heavy and messy too. This lightweight and very powerful tool trims wooden door and gate edges like butter. Tip: Watch out for recessed finishing nails just below the wood surface when plaining. Yea, I have hit a few nails, screws, railroad spikes (not really) and the tool still cuts perfect with it's original blade. I am sure there are many other uses for this plainer that I will discover. Highly recomended and doesn,t need belt changes like a sander.

Working in the construction industry, I often have to plane down studs to allow for straighter drywall installation. I was excited when I saw this planer, as it is inconvenient to run a cord into a house when you are doing a walkthrough. Well let me tell you that this planer was created for just such purposes! It is extremely responsive, starting at full speed, and turning off immediately. I have the lithium batteries, but wanted to try it on the standard battery to test the running time. I planed 20 studs in the house I tried it on with the standard battery, and it showed no signs of slowing down! The cutting wheel is 2" wide, making it perfect for just such projects. The bag attachment is a cool bonus - catches about 80% of the shavings. If you work with warped studs, or have small areas that need shaving, this is the perfect tool for you. Go Ryobi!
