I recently replaced an old chandelier in the breakfast area of our kitchen with a ceiling fan that had been sitting, unopened, in the garage for 8 years. The chandelier had the basic 3 wire switch - hot, common and ground. No 4th wire to separate switch the fan and it's light.
The fan and light each had their own chain on/off controls but I didn't like to chains hanging down above the breakfast table and I wanted to be able to switch them individually from the wall as well as dim the light without affecting the fan.
Solution: the Lutron Maestro Combination Fan and Light Control. It consists of a control unit that mounts inside the fan dome as it is installed and a switch that communicates with it mounted on the wall.
Assuming that you know how to wire a ceiling fan, installation is easy. Clear instructions are included and I went to the Lutron website and downloaded a PDF version of them as well. Also, Lutron has an excellent installation video for this unit on YouTube. The video really helped this DIYer!
Functionally, there are separate on/off switches for fan and light and each of those have 7 different adjustment levels. So you get a 7 speed fan and 7 light brightness settings. Both remember the setting when switched off and restore the setting when turned back on.
The wall switch fit perfectly in the single box previously used by the chandelier switch, however the face plate was difficult to detach from the switch when unpacking it. There probably is a technique to detaching it but the instructions don't let you in on the secret.
Lutron products tend to be a little pricy and this is no exception but its a whole lot easier than running another wire from ceiling to wall switch! Also, I personally think the appearance of the wall switch is a little plain but all in all this is a great solution to ceiling fan switching!

This was easy to install. Just remember to hook up the fan completely, set your speed and then install this new controller.

Product makes retrofitting a two wire installation into a two switch digital control for a combo ceiling light and fan. Problem I've encountered with one of the three installed is it constantly has to be reset. Sometimes the switch will indicate the light is on but it doesn't function. Or the fan will spin at a constant speed even though the switch indicates it's off. When the switches work, they're awesome but sometimes can be frustrating.

I never write reviews, but I had to support this fan control. If your ceiling fan and light are powered by only one wall switch, and you would like to control the fan without the light, and vice versa, you have got to buy this thing ! It turns your 3 speed fan into a 7 speed, with 7 levels of light dimming, and you can control them independently. No wires to add, easy to install, and it works flawless. Now I need a couple more for the other rooms !! Wish I would have found this a long time ago. Well worth the money. Thanks.

After wasting a lot of time and money with a Hampton Bay wireless controller that never worked right, I finally returned it and got this Leutron Maestro fan/light controller and am very happy with it. I couldn't use this wired controller on both of my fans, but I did have one that was already wired for a regular light switch. I originally didn't get this controller because I thought it would require running additional wires for separate fan/light control, but I was wrong. This unit somehow communicates through the existing wiring to give you all the functionality of separate fan/light controls with regular wiring to the fan. In addition, it gives you 7 different fan speed controls (my fan is only a 3 speed, but now it has 7 speeds!) and a continuously variable dimmer control for the lights. It's nice to finally have a fan controller that works right every time! I wish I could use this with my other fan too! If you have the choice to use a wired switch, it requires very little additional work to hook up compared to the wireless ones and is well worth the effort. My only complaint about this unit is the price, but the quality is definitely on par with the cost. The switch fits great in a 1-gang electrical box, not sure if it would work in a 2-gang setup or not as it has a special faceplate that snaps over it. Also, the fan receiver/controller that fits under the base of the fan was a good size...not too big to fit. I do wish it offered the ability to change the brightness of the led indicator lights on the wall switch. I'd like them a bit dimmer, but they aren't obnoxiously bright like on many other modern electronics.
