Honest review with both pros and cons:
We're a family of four living in a suburban neighborhood with municipal water. We've lived here for a year and have grown increasingly annoyed with the hardness and chlorine in the water. Water out of the sink has always smelled and tasted like treated pool water. With a filter on the fridge, we thought we were doing ok. We noticed that our clothes were getting worn out quickly from water hardness beating clothes up in the washer and also noticed residue/crust accumulating in the dishwasher. I did some online research and found the Waterboss 950 for city/municipal water. After reading that some water softener systems can cost $2000 to $8000, I was hoping that the reviews from other customers on this unit were accurate because the price just can't be beat - here's the lowdown:
PROS: 1) No matter how hard your water is, this softener will make a whole lot of things a lot better - washing your hands, taking a shower, using less soap, clean drinking water, making good coffee, running a clean dishwasher without crust and grime buildup, soft water to preserve your clothes longer, the softener will just make your life better.
2) No more nasty chlorine smell or taste AT ALL.
3) The softener is small and compact - it fit in our crawl-space very easily.
4) The unit comes with its own hardness and PH test kits.
5) Easy-to-follow instructions (including a video) for installation.
6) Customer service is accessible and friendly - I called the manufacturer before making the purchase to ask about the difference between the 950 and the 225 and was able to get a representative very quickly. (BTW - the only difference is the number - some retailers label it as 950, some as 225).
7) Softener took about two and a half days to ship once I ordered it.
Cons - 1) The only con I have is that the fittings in the back of the unit seem cheap compared to the rest of the unit. Everything about this device is pretty awesome except for these connection fittings - I wouldn't have minded paying some extra money for some brass compression fittings as opposed to the cheap PVC or plastic that they come with. In my "worry" not to overtighten the fittings, I didn't tighten them enough and water blew out of them at first. Tightened it a little more and it was fine, but it doesn't seem like there would be this problem if the fittings were brass compression.
Bottom line - despite the fittings, this softener is awesome!
FYI - for one of the individuals complaining that the water turned black after installing, mine did too - for about a minute or two. You're supposed to run about 72 gallons worth of water the first time you have the softener actually engaged - just read the manual and you will be fine. Also, I went ahead and created my own "bypass" outside of the softener, Yes, the softener has its own bypass internally, but if you ever have to remove or replace the unit, you will still be able to have running water if you create your own bypass. This thing is awesome and is an ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVE for any individual or family with municipal/city water.

Rated 4 out of 5Â by Dave Good value for price
The Water Boss water softner required basic plumbing knowledge to install and came with an installation kit. One deficiency is the instructions describe the exit water going to a floor drain. My installation used a builder supplied exit pipe. I found I needed to add a hose clamp (not included) to the exit hose fitting to prevent the hose from popping off during operation. The water softening is adequite but I can smell chlorene even though this system has a carben chlorene module. I have asked if the chlorene filtering can be improved.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by MrsAMP Wow!!! What a great product!!
To start please read the review from AJ1234, he was spot on in his review!!! (That being said I absolutely agree with ALL of his Pros. I can't say much of his Con being that I didn't actually install the unit, my father-in-law did who worked for a professional plumber who only suggests this product to his customers!) Also, we had the black grit for a minute or two after installation.
We saw immediate results in our water!! We have very hard water, the initial test read about 21 GPG and after one regeneration it went down to ZERO!!!!!! Our water tastes amazing now!!
~The price can't be beat for such an amazing unit!!!
~Uses VERY LITTLE salt. We've had the unit about a month and we're still on the original 80 pounds. (I have a 13 year old daughter that takes the LONGEST showers and we still have 30-35 pounds left in the tank.
~Regeneration only takes about 15 minutes! (While others can take up to 2 hours.)
I'M SO GLAD WE GOT THE WATERBOSS 950!!!!
My only Con: Once in awhile after a regeneration the water will taste salty until it has been flushed out of the lines, but in our old house we had one of those $7,000 Water Soft units and it happened with it too! (The WaterBoss is still worth it because the water tastes so good!!)
