I bought this kit to install on my Ariens 46' riding tractor and am very pleased with it. I thought I'd go over the installation procedure for those unsure what it will entail. Obviously, this will only apply to those of you with the same tractor as I have, but as I bought it at Home Depot chances are this will help some people. You will not need to remove the deck. Setting the deck to the highest blade setting will give you ample room to access the blades. The kit comes with 2 blades and a plastic mulcher plate. Some people seemed surprised this was plastic, but I can't think of what else they would make it out of as metal would rattle against the metal deck unless they lined it with rubber...but that seems like overkill and the color of the metal (likely painted) wouldn't match all mowers as this is a universal kit. In any event, plastic is the appropriate material and it is not cheaply made (of similar quality to the plastic deflector shield that came attached to the tractor).
Anyway, you will need a socket wrench with a hexagonal socket...my tractor required a 5/8" socket. I suppose a wrench would do as well, but I would recommend one with a long handle to get the extra torque. To that end, one of my bolts was on there pretty tight and I needed to use a breaker bar to get it loose (which is why a wrench would not be ideal, you might chew up the bolt). From there, simply unscrew the bolt, remove the old blade and place on the new blade and screw the bolt back in. Repeat this for the other blade. How easy is that? The kit comes with instructions as well. There is also a mulcher plate that attaches under the deflector shield very easily. You just lift the deflector shield and snap it in and then use hooks attached to rubber straps to attach the mulcher plate to the deck of your tractor. As others have said, from there you can remove the deflector shield if you want as it seems pretty of superfluous once the mulcher plate is on. This will improve your maneuverability, so that's an added feature of a mulching kit (as if not raking weren't enough).
The blades did a good job mulching for me. A few tips on mulching. Don't expect it to mulch very high grass and be sure to mow when your grass is dry. If your grass is high, make two passes and that should do the trick. Your second pass should ideally be perpendicular to your first to mulch the cut grass that was left behind from the first pass. Also, if you're noticing that cut grass is being left behind put the blades on the highest setting and that should help. You can use a lower blade setting next time you mow, just don't wait too long in between mowing.
All in all, a good product that works and is easy to install. Removing the bolts may take some muscle, but my tractor was brand new (only used once) so perhaps the bolts were a little tighter as you would expect them to loosen a bit with use. In any event, a breaker bar that you can pick up at HD or pep boys should do the trick.
