CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 32 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Well Built. Impressive Quality. Rapid Delivery. I spent a lot of time researching porta-gens. Consumer Reports gave the Generac GP series their "Best Buy" rating. I did buy this upgraded XG series however. Generac's website has a lot of excellent videos on how to size, select a generator, as well as how to use one. I purchased the $200 more expensive XG series (vs. the same wattage rated GP) because I like the way the motor is lubricated (oil pump like a car) vs. splash lube, and feel it will be more dependable in the long run for the extra $$. Next step was to determine how big a generator. When would I most likely use the generator? New England -winter storm -power outage. That takes A/C unit out of the sizing exercise. Then I "sized" the generator for my needs. Must haves: Furnaces (2), Fridge, TV, Internet, Cable, a few lights. Assuming you have an electrician install a transfer box, you'll "pick" the 10 circuits from your breaker box that you'll want to have transferred over to the generator on power loss. I'll also run a couple of extension cords so I can open the garage doors. So, picking the 10 circuits that included the fridge etc. gave me about 4000 watts continuous. (Generac, Honda Power, and other websites provide tools for calculating your power usage. Add a generous overage to whatever you come up with. For me, rather than barely getting by with a 5K generator, I chose the 7K for the extra power it offers for unseen needs. Essentially I'll run the gen at 50% load. When I ordered it on-line, the Depot webpage showed it as backordered out a couple of weeks. Bummer. But miraculously (it is mid-winter as I post this, and the storms are coming fast and furious), it showed up 10 days after order. The shipping company did a nice job in keeping me notified, and even though the truck stopped at the curb, the driver rolled the pallet right into my garage. Easy. Unpacking and setting up was a snap. Packaging was solid. Directions were very clear - a quick start set-up sheet is taped on top of the unit and includes illustrations of each step - basically wheels, mounting foot, adding oil and gas, connecting the positive starter terminal and how to start/choke the engine. Set up took maybe 15 minutes in the garage. So far, I was very impressed with the visual quality and compact design of the gen, the packaging and the ease of getting it ready for its maiden voyage. Took the gen outside and it started right up. Follow the instructions on the unit on how to correctly use the choke. Within 30 seconds, the engine settled down to it's normal noise level, but very smooth. Plugged in the first ceremonial light to one of the receptacles. Even though it weighs 250, it is easy to move around with the fold-out handle (push the button on the handle in to retract it when finished). In summary, this Generac unit appears well built with quality workmanship. I was very pleased with the delivery process. The unit was easy to set up (oh yeah, you'll do better if you have a funnel for the oil addition), and it started right up. Two thumbs up. Plus a middle-finger for old man winter - bring it on baby. By the time you're done with the cost of the unit, and the electrician to install the transfer box next to your breaker box, you're looking at $2,200 - $2,500 for this project. But having backup when the power goes out - priceless. This 7000 watt model should handle the needs of most homes (not the whole house - but all the things you'd need if you lost power for a day or two). I would certainly recommend this Generac to anyone. The toughest part of the process is picking those 10 circuits in the breaker box that are going to be transferred over to the generator when the power goes out. Take the time to correctly identify and choose those circuits carrying the equipment (fridge, furnace, pumps, etc.) you'll want to power. You can't run extension cords on furnaces for instance. The transfer box is a must have, Use two cell phones (one person at the breaker panel and the other one somewhere in the house) to turn a breaker off and make sure we understood what things in the house lost power. Rated 1 out of 5 by DISAPPOINTED We are very disappointed with the Generac warranty service. Purchased a XG-7000 and with less than 75 hours it would no longer start. The authorized repair facility determined it required a new motor. Unfortunately, as good as the repair facility is, they have to communicate with Generac through a regional distributor; this organization was less than interested in assisting with the ordering and delivery of a new motor, and actually lied to my repair folks twice about the shipping status. Contacting Generac directly was even more frustrating. I recommend steering clear of this company, as they have a huge problem with customer service. You'll remain on hold for an inordinate amount of time, the customer service reps will promise to call back with updated information and then don't, and they tell you it's impossible to speak with their supervisor, since they're out of the office. My generator is now on its eighth week at the repair shop, and a new motor hasn't shipped yet. Two shops in my vicinity used to perform Generac warranty repairs, but no longer due to the incredibly time-consuming paperwork the company puts them through. THINK TWICE BEFORE BUYING A GENERAC. THEY DON'T LIKE TO REPAIR THEIR PRODUCTS. August 4, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Expensive But Good This is a very good generator, I think it is a tad pricey considering other brands in the same size and features however, that said, this is a top quality generator. I have only set it up and run it for a few minutes but all worked well and no glitches. My only thought about the electric start option is that there is no way to connect a trickle charger to the battery. The battery is charged from an onboard charger and the battery posts are not user accessible, thus using any charger other than the one supplied with the unit will not work. October 15, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by This is by far the best generator i have seen for the money!!! The Generac XG7000E is by far one of the best i have seen on the market and i have been doing research for years. It was very easy to assemble and came with everything i needed to get it up and running except for the gas!! The kit included its first oil and filter change along with air filter. It has a hour meter on it that tells you when you need to change the oil and filter and the the air filter. It has gfci outlets for the 120 volt outlets. I love the power bar so i know how much power i have left to spare on the output. The generator took a little bit to get started the first time but i learned that if you only pull the choke out half to 3/4 way out it starts right up. This unit is a very beefy one and well built. once running it is not very loud i think my snow blower is louder then this generator. Runs everything i needed in my home in case of a power outage and has pleanty left over. I have not tried the oven or stove or electric furnace since i know i could easily go over with these appliances. March 25, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very Pleased Generator is exactly what I thought it would be. It started up immediately, and ran like a charm. We had an electrician come, wire our box, put a plug outside, and make us an 85ft cord for it. We tested it and it ran our well, 2 fridges, 1 freezer, our boiler and assorted lights. We are very pleased. October 2, 2012
