I purchased this product because i did not want to back feed my generator the wrong way and i wanted to feed my house safely especially if i am not home and my family needs to hook it up. It took longer to mount the unit to the wall than it did to wire the load center. I have only used the switch twice and both times were for testing. I am looking forward to the first power outage to see how well it will perform. The hardest part of the project was balancing the load for my appliances (not all appliance information is readily available).
I purchased the larger panel (10 circuit) because the difference in price was small and while i didn't use all the circuits i have room to add if needed. I especially like the watt meters to track my power consumption.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by PrparedInFlorida Hassle Free Excellent Back Up Power Alternative
Weighing the cost benefit utilizing this product matched with a suitable generator you can not go wrong for a easy fool proof way to provide emergency back up power to you home in the event of a extended power outage. I also purchased the Westinghouse 7500E generator from Home depot to pair with this switch (which I will also review) the pros are ease of installation all necessary items are included with the exception of the 10/3 wire to reach the power inlet box that is provided in this kit. This device once installed is virtually fool proof, you can supply power to ten circuits allowing the home owner to support critical appliances, and lighting, a water well pump etc, if planned correctly you can included circuits that can power a small window air conditioner (or two), if you live in the south that is a critical item to have after a hurricane it gets hot and muggy. The watt meters are a bonus to have while powering circuits and monitoring the loads being applied to both sides of the generator. If you can operate a screw driver and wire cutters/strippers you can install this switch, and save several hundred dollars! Let's face it unless you purchase a whole house generator costing several thousands of dollars, that can power everything including oven, stove top, central A/C and afford to feed that beast this is a excellent alternative, one extended power outage and it will pay for itself preserving everything in your freezer(s) and or refrigerator, and giving you peace of mind and security. All without breaking the bank! The cons related to this switch are zero in my opinion, proven security when dealing with high voltage better than a interlock that has the potential to fail endangering you and possibly a lineman, and possibly over loading the generator. Anyone in your household can operate this switch safely and securely, it is so easy to use it's a no brainer! Plan ahead if you intend to go this route it will save you hours and loads of frustration, take the time to figure out which breakers control which outlets throughout your home, label the breakers (on the breaker itself) then apply the letter designation (A,B,C, etc) that the switch uses to the breaker you choose to energize, write it down double triple check your work, when the time comes to install the switch it will be a breeze. The absolute worst part is feeding the 10/3 wire through conduit to the power inlet box. After researching the many different options out there I decided to go the route of this transfer switch it has proven reliability, and the ease of use played a huge factor, think about the other members in your family, and the fact that they may be the ones to set up the generator and provide back up power, you want them to be safe too! I highly recommend this transfer switch, in the event of a power outage you will be a happy camper, the neighbors you have might be strangers now, if you have this setup, and a power outage for an extended amount of time occurs, they won't be for long!
If you are on the fence reading back up power to your home get this switch you will not be sorry!

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Boor Outstanding product and Manufacturer!
I bought the Reliance Controls 31410CRK Transfer Switch Kit after we endured a 45-hr power outage, using a new generator and several extension cords. I bought this type because I wanted load meters and I wanted some circuits left on the power line so I could tell when power is restored.
It is easy to install; however, I had mine installed professionally as part of a project to replace my house incoming power and install a new load center. The electricians were impressed with the unit and insisted on trying it out with my generator before they left. The kit has all the parts you need, except for the wiring between the AC inlet and the panel. This is unique based on your installation.
The company's customer support is outstanding. I wanted to change the (4) 20A circuit breakers to 15A breakers. I explained my plan, and they shipped the (4) breakers free of charge (next day UPS) if I sent the unused ones back to them. I ended up leaving the unit as originally built, so I returned the same circuit breakers back to them.
Only 1 complaint - the chart for mapping the circuit breaker loads is on top of the unit, where you cannot reach to read it. I printed labels and stuck them to the front of the unit.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by DIY4me Exactly what I needed
I bought this for use with a 7000 watt portable propane generator.
It's rated up to 8000 watts and has a 10 circuit capacity - 4 x 20 amp and 6 x 15 amp arranged in two banks of 5. The instructions are simple and the flexible configuration allowed me to configure more circuits than I expected.
I purchased the additional 10 gauge romex and conduit to run the provided generator socket to a convenient location.
The manual gives all the necessary specifications for the cabling and safe operation requirements.
Front panel is divided in two sides each having line/off/generator switches, individual circuit trips and the benefit of 2 meters showing power use on each bank of 5 switches. This is very useful when testing because it shows how balanced the circuits are and allowed me to increase the load within the safety rating by allocating additional circuits and appliances for improved load and better use.
I would have liked to see an additional straight Greenfield connector for the main breaker box. In my case I couldn't use the provided 90 degree elbow.
Overall a very good product with simple and clear installation instructions for the DIY'er but those unfamiliar with electrical wiring should employ a qualified electrician because you will be working in a distribution panel which contains live connections even when powered off!.
