Rated 2 out of 5 by CAUTION: This unit will leak without modifications I have owned this unit for 2 years now. This will be my 3rd summer using it. The first year it leaked everywhere, just about all the time. I resorted to keeping the unit in a bucket, insulated by towels underneath but to no avail due to condensation. The second year I attempted to keep a regular schedule of draining the unit daily to try and prevent the leaks from happening, but a typical humid summer day would cause a leak in only a few hours of runtime. Then I did some searching online. Lo and behold, LG support doesn't even have the specs of their own product. This unit is shipped with a condensate pump, and supplied with a clear plastic tubing drain separate from the accordion exhaust pipe. This led me to firstly ignore spending any money on calling for and paying for any technician to come out and not know what they were doing, and secondly take the unit apart and figure out for myself what what going on. HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART: ( warning, slightly technical jargon follows) The unit's evaporator drain pan is designed to drain across the condenser, evaporate, and then be exhausted through the accordian exhaust pipe. However, in humid climates, it isn't enough, and will ultimately drain to the bottom of the unit where ideally the condensate pump will engage by the float valve when the water gets high enough. Two issues will prevent this from happening. 1- there is no easy way to access the evaporator drain pan and clean/clear any blockages from dirt and mold/mildew buildup short of taking the unit's covers off. This means that if there is a blockage, the overflow will bypass the drain to the bottom of the unit and instead will begin leaking from the seams of the unit at the bottom (this is especially annoying, since the outside panels have insulation in them that will be impregnated with water first before leaking, delaying the leak from showing and making it very difficult to find where it's originally coming from). 2- The unit's condensate pump is hardly ever used unless in heat pump mode, so there is a good chance that it will become stuck to the bottom of the lower condensate pan by gunk (read: mold/mildew), which again is impossible to access without taking the unit apart. With no access panel on the front, there is no where one can get to the parts of the unit that would ordinarily need regular cleaning. Because this is an indoor portable unit, all the things that would normally not need attention like a window unit would, become very important if you want to prevent leaks from happening. HERE'S MY SOLUTION- first take the front and back panels off the unit, carefully. Grab a drill with a 3/8" bit and make a new, and larger hole next to the EVAPORATOR drain pan overflow. It's on the right side of the unit, halfway up, when looking at it from behind. This is to bypass the tiny 1/4" overflow hole that is easily obstructed by debris from the evaporator drain pan, which causes the majority of the leaks. However by doing is you create a hole outside of the condenser fins which would normally collect the water, leading me to step 2. Put the panels back on the unit, you'll need them to hold a piece of metal on to direct the water flow from the new hole you just made. Take a small piece of aluminum. I cut a soda can's top and bottom off, unrolled the metal, and then cut it in half, carefully I took that piece and positioned it like a small shield under my new evap drain hole so it would redirect the water back into the condenser fins. It's maybe 2x2" but it does the trick of keeping the water in the unit and not on my hardwood floors. Step-3 pour some bleach or anti-mildew cleaner into the condenser fins at the bottom. This is to kill and clean the bottom pan of the unit and hopefully loosen the pump float so it can do it's job of removing the water. If water starts leaking again, it probably means the float is stuck to the bottom, preventing the pump from working. If so, take the unit apart again, find the pump and float at the bottom of the unit, and manually scrub and clean it until it is loose and able to do its job. I've had this setup a since July of last year and have not had a leak (knock on wood) since. Like I've said earlier, LG support wasn't even aware that their own unit had a condensation pump on this thing, so they are no help whatsoever. This work around was through much trial and tribulation on my part, but I hope those that are current owners can learn from my struggles. For those contemplating purchasing this unit, know that it has this design fault and buyer beware. Having done this modification, the unit works incredibly well now as A/C and as a portable heater. But if I had known what I was getting into, I would not have bought it. June 16, 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Buyer Beware I should have read the reviews first but it was an Impulse Buy. I am having the same issues that many others are having. It worked great for the first Month and now it won't stay on. It cycles on for about 30 sec, then shuts off and blows hot air. The clean cycle doesn't seem to do anything and it never drained water and I'm sure there is plenty inside the unit as I live in Texas. I really wanted this unit to work unfortunately my luck didn't hold out. Buyer Beware July 24, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by A+++ Machine for both AC and heat This is a great product. I am cooling a 16x16 area. The heat is good as well. It's a little loud but still more quiet than the last one I had. If your window has an inner ledge you might have an issue with the mounting hardware. In which case I just cut a slim piece of wood to fit under the widow bracket and it elevated it enough to let it fit. It can cool a room fast and will shut off until it needs to maintain the temp. I cannot stress enough how important it is to make sure that you elevate the unit enough if you are going to put a drip hose on it. If you don't you will have a wet floor. I had returned the Soleus 12,000 BTU ac/heat unit for this one.... 10 times better. April 5, 2012
Rated 1 out of 5 by Stay away from LG! LG has bitten me in the past and should have known better. We use portable coolers quite frequently and have had good success in the past, but not with this model. After allowing it to sit standing up for 24hours, we turned the machine on and immediately staring having problems with the compressor turning on and off. We tried several setting and ended up calling tech support, No help there either (just like the last few times) They claimed the room was too small, WRONG! The room was 80 degrees and the unit had just turned on. We fooled around with a few more hours and finally decided to return the product. While in Home Depot returning the product we saw they had a pallet of this exact model, all laying down on their sides, which is really bad for the compressor, even allowing 24hours standing up. If you buy it beware, It's got a mind of its own and tech support is of no help! June 4, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Junk... Worked for less than 30 minutes Brought it to our office, plugged it in, a few minutes later it started making horrible noises and then shut off completely. This is garbage. July 30, 2014
