I love to grill, however I have had concerns over carcinogens created by cooking over an open flame. I'm a cancer survivor and do what I can to reduce the risks. I've looked at infra-red as an option, but past models require constant cleaning or the tiny holes clog up and seriously affect performance.
This grill has two concave metal plates that sit on top of the flames and redistribute the heat and thereby eliminating carcinogens created by the open fire. My biggest worry was that this would make my food taste less grilled and more like it was cooked in a pan. It doesn't! I've had the grill for almost a month and cook on it almost every day.
It does sometimes get a little smokey as the fat drips and collects in these metal plates, but I've only had one flare-up so far. Because of that I can be a little less attentive to the grill without getting "crunchies" on the burgers as my kids call the sizzled parts!
I'd recommend taking off the grates and clearing out the residue from the plates every few uses. It cuts down on the smoke and takes all of 30 seconds.
Couldn't recommend this grill more!

I have researched multiple brands and multiple models (including charbroil).... Nothing I've seen compares to this particular model for the money.
If you like cleaning grease traps and constantly watching the grill to
Prevent flare ups and fires, this is NOT the grill for you!
Now if you actually enjoy grilling, Evenly cooked, juicy meats and restaurant grade presentation.... This very well could be the grill for you. NO FLARE UPS! No burned, over cooked steaks, burgers or wings.
This truly is a great product. And I
Must admit.... I am very picky.
Oh... By the way. The jury is actually still out on the longevity of this grill, but we just retired our last charbroil grill after 13 years!

I've been grilling since before it became chic - - Daddy would build a fire of hickory limbs down by the river, let it burn down to coals and lay a refrigerator shelf on rocks over the coals. Since then (over 70 years), I've burned out a dozen charcoal, later gas, grills. Never quite got my steak right - - until now.
The heat is more even on my Gourmet 4 burner, more intense, so I can get that initial searing that seals in the flavor - - immediately lower the heat, finish on the warming shelf, and viola ! ! Fantastic steak.
Also does wonders on fish (planked salmon, delicious) - roasts, turkeys, on the rotissere and enjoy. Use it year round and enjoy the results.

Had ours for three years which we cook an average two times a week year round. We replaced the starter twice and finaly quit using it because it broke again. We had to replaced the trays which rusted out at our cost. The second year the frame work which holds the trays rusted out which we welded parts to keep it operating. The final death of the BBQ was the framework holding the burners rusted.

Great Grill, Easy Cleaning, no flare ups. Got it over a year ago at HD.
There is no direct contact with the flame, and it takes little longer that other grills to heat up, but it is worth it. Meat is never dried out, chicken is juicy.
I have cooked chicken, steaks, kabobs, veggies all great outcomes.
Also, you can throw in wood chips straight on the U shaped bowl under the grates, and get fantastic smoke flavor.
#1 rust on the U shaped bowl, I sprayed it with oil and let it season, but its still rusts. Luckily, Charbroil sent me a replacement Bowl and Grate.
#2, when you open the grill to check on your food, it takes longer to heat back up, unlike other grills.
