Rated 5 out of 5 by Cheap and Cool I researched for weeks on all types of air conditioners. High end mini splits, wall units, ptacs, everything. I calculated all the costs and the energy used. Today i decided to go with a cheap window unit and hope for the best. Picked it up instore along with some 2x3s to make a nice frame for it. I wanted a very sturdy mount without any screws going into my actual window. It is fully supported and the frame can be removed by taking out a few screws. I had a piece of 3/4 cabinet ply left over to fit the top. Easy! It is not a high end unit of impeccable construction but it is light and cheap. It pulls a very respectable EER for its size. At full blast it will produce 80 decibels of sound at 4' distance on my little meter. It doesn't sound anywhere near that loud but i guess it is. It sounds like a smooth fan. Sure i could have gotten an inverter mini split and had 1.5x the efficiency, but it would also cost up to 10x as much by the time its installed. The performance per dollar is great and the EER is pretty good for a window unit. My garage has plenty of windows, so taking half of one is no big deal. July 14, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 Very pleased by my new A/C I finally replaced my 22-yr old 10k btu unit. I have an 800 sq ft apartment in the "valley" in LA which had temps of 95F this week. Price was right and installation was a little tricky due to no window sills, just punch out the window and hang it with 2x2 wood supports. I also got some carpet throwaways and stapled them on the wood edges to help soak up vibration. This model was pleasantly smaller and I turned it on. The A/C works great, had to get used to the remote and all the options available but the unit cooled about 2/3rds of my apt, much more than my old unit. And this was on the lowest setting as well. I tried higher settings but don't think I'll really ever need them. This unit is quieter than my old one but still not like built-in A/C but it works just fine for me. They've come a lot further in 22 years and I am very satisfied with this new unit. You can see the wood/carpet under the unit. May 3, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good product for the price I have not had this unit very long so I cannot rate the energy efficiency yet, but overall a decent product for the price. Pros: - Very good at it job. It cools very well so far. - No rattling or odd noises as this unit is in a bedroom. - Quality for the price. - Very easy to install. Cons: - Not as quiet as I hoped, but it's a consistent noise as long as it's on, so it's not too bad. - The biggest issue is drainage. I'm not sure if this is common with other GE units, but there is no drainage on the outside and after about 3 days of use, the water pooling caused splashing from the fan, which cause unwanted noise. Easy fix...drill a small hole in the back (outside) corner. December 26, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by good a/c but one flaw... This a/c is ice cold and blows strong, very quiet compared to my portable a/c. the only flaw is the electronic thermostat does not work properly. Its like 10 degrees off...! It seems like the thermostat does not work properly after the a/c turns itself off during the auto mode. other than that I would have given it a five star. GE is always a brand I have confidence in! May 15, 2013
Rated 3 out of 5 by Cools great, BUT... I'm really torn on this AC unit. It cools pretty well when on the "Cool" setting. BUT…the "Energy Saver" mode is nearly worthless as it seems to be very inconsistent and the thermostat appears questionable too, which is really disappointing for $300. We've had the unit not quite a week yet, but quickly noticed the Energy Saver mode would shut off automatically, as it should. The problem is restarting. Just this morning we woke up to a somewhat warm room yet the thermostat indicated 64 degrees. I don't think so. More like 75. The thermostat especially seems off when using the Energy Saver mode. We were impressed to see an energy conserving setting so we wouldn't have to have it on 24/7. Does not seem to be the case in practice. We're debating on returning the unit, but for the price this has some of the highest ratings. Is this really the kind of quality you can expect for $300 bucks?! What a let down. 3-stars for now. If we end up returning it I would give it 1.5-stars, as it does cool your room, but you seemingly need to treat it as a manual on/off appliance. Not as advertised. August 29, 2014
