This is my first router. Reading the manual and watching some Youtube videos really made this fun to use. I've routed edges of shelves and cut grooves to mount book shelf features.

Bought this recently. Â Even with the clamp tightened all the way, the fine adjustment knob rotates from the vibration of the machine, especially when using 1/2" shank bits. Â This causes the bit to slowly drop as you use it, destroying the workpiece and you, too, if your have a body part in the wrong place at the wrong time.
There is no latch or lever to lock the fine adjustment knob. Â It is free to rotate and it does.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Chuck Very small learning curve
I used my "brand X" for many years so I was comfortable using it. (There is little room for error with ANY router)
With my new 1817 it was only a matter of a couple of cuts and boom, back in the "groove".

Rated 5 out of 5Â by woodbutcher great basic router - i've tried em all
the current trend to variable speed routers is baffling- as a professional wood worker for 35 years, I cannot recall one instance where I wished for a slower turning router - these variable speed systems always fail, leaving you with an expensive paper weight. skil model 1817 - simple one speed router with good power, good collet and easy adjustment. great price too.
