I purchased a Winchester safe on 28-Apr-2014. The door comes from the factory unlocked and before locking my guns in it, I tested it and the lock failed to open. I contacted Winchester customer support and they first required me to send a copy of my receipt. The following day they sent me an override code that did not open the lock. I was then told that I could return the safe or they would send a locksmith to repair or replace the lock. Not wanting to transport a 500 lb. safe back to the store, I opted for the locksmith. It took two weeks for Winchester to hire a locksmith, send him a replacement lock and repair my safe. I was annoyed, but I figured I got a bad lock.
On 20-Jun-2014 the replacement lock failed. I normally leave the safe unlocked unless I leave the house and I locked this safe less than six times during this five week period.
I called the same locksmith and asked him if he could unlock my safe because I needed access to my guns for a planned shooting event the following day and thankfully he was able to open the safe that day.
I contacted Winchester safes and was told that since I hired the locksmith (the same locksmith that they had hired to do the original work) they would not cover the cost.
Rather than waste time arguing with Winchester customer service or have the same type of inferior lock reinstalled, I had the locksmith install a dial lock.
I contacted Winchester again and offered to send them the defective electronic lock to them if they paid the postage. I also asked if they would be willing to pay the amount they would have paid the locksmith had they called him instead of me. They declined to do anything; they did not even want their lock returned.
The lock installed in this safe at the factory is a La Gard lock with a cheap membrane type keypad and according to the locksmith this lock has a high failure rate. I never owned a safe with an electronic lock before and after this experience, I never will again.
The safe itself is a cheap low end safe, mechanism is rough and workmanship is shoddy. If there comes a time when you absolutely need immediate access to your guns do not buy this safe. Donât ever buy a safe with an electronic lock, it may fail at the worst possible time and cost you your life.
Winchester customer service used a pathetic excuse to avoid their responsibility to support their warranty by stating that I had hired the locksmith (the same locksmith that they had hired originally). Winchester customer service will use any excuse possible to avoid supporting the warranty.
It seems that Winchester is again in the process of again ruining their name as they did in the past, by licensing it to businesses that paste âWinchesterâ on all sorts of inferior products. Winchester manufactured an excellent rifle (the Model 70) from 1936 through 1963, but in 1964 they changed the design to increase profits and in the process ruined an excellent rifle. I will never again buy any Winchester product.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by Earl Best deal in the entire state of Hawaii!!
Heavy safe but once the door is open, you can remove it for transportation and lighten the load by a 100 lbs at least. Fits my 7 long guns and two hand guns easily. I bought it to safeguard my antique firearms, but my wife's jewelry took up a fraction of the space and is worth exponentially more than my firearms. The shipping was awesome! only 16 days from the mainland to my local Home Depot on kauai, Hawaii. Mahalo!
