Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common replacement window installation questions
How often should windows be replaced?
After 20 to 25 years, your home’s windows should be inspected by a licensed professional to see if replacements are needed. You may be able to repair windows to maintain value and temporarily prevent the cost of replacing your windows, however installing new windows is worth the investment. If there’s cracking and peeling around the exteriors, you feel drafts near the windows, or condensation frequently fogs up the glass, a window installation project may be necessary.
What installation methods are used to replace my windows?
There are two standard methods for installing windows. Pocket installation – sometimes referred to as insert window installation – places a brand-new window into an existing frame. When removing the old window, only the sash is removed and the new window glass fits into the existing opening. Pocket window installation is ideal when the old window sill is in good condition and different window sizes or styles are not preferred. Full-frame window installation removes the entire window, including the frame and trim. Installation of the new windows will include a brand-new frame, trim, and even improved insulation. Full-frame installation is used when old frames have wood rot or cannot be repaired, improving energy efficiency is a main concern, or the replacement window size and shape is different from the previous windows.
Can installing replacement windows reduce my heating and air conditioning costs?
Yes. Regardless of the window type you choose, high-quality windows with thick, insulated glass are more energy-efficient than old, leaky single-pane clear glass windows. The Home Depot offers a variety of window glass options – low-E4, dual-pane, even triple-pane glass with gas insulation – that have earned the Energy Star qualification designed to save energy, help save money on utility bills, and help protect the environment.
How many windows can be installed?
Whether you’re looking to install one new window or need every window in your house replaced, our expert installers can do the work for you.
How can I properly maintain my new windows?
After getting windows professionally installed, maintaining the frames, glass, and screens by keeping them clean will ensure your windows look great. Gently wiping the frame of the window with a soft cloth should remove any loose debris that collects over time. Window glass can sufficiently be cleaned with household glass cleaners, however be sure to dry thoroughly to prevent streaks. Window screens can be removed and washed with warm, soapy water or left in place and cleaned with a damp cloth to remove dirt and dust.
