Drywall, also commonly referred to as sheetrock or wall board, is a lightweight cost efficient product for use on interior walls or ceiling panels in new construction, renovation and repair work. In residential construction the most commonly used sizes are 4' x 8' x ½". Other sizes, thicknesses and specialty boards may be stocked and/or available by special order.

For small and medium sized projects, most DIY'ers will choose to use the 4'x8' x ½" size because it offers the best value in per-sheet price and is the easiest to handle (each sheet weights just over 50 lbs). Drywall can be nailed or screwed to wood or metal studs. When used on ceilings it's also sometimes glued up to help keep it from sagging over time. Drywall panels are packaged in pairs to reduce the likelihood of damage in handling, but the two-packs can be separated and sold individually.

In addition to regular drywall products for standard interior applications, specialty products offer additional benefits. Type X, 5/8” thick panels offer additional fire resistance where certain fire-ratings are required, and because of their extra thickness can also offer increased room to room sound control. Moisture resistant drywall is typically used in areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, garages, kitchens and utility rooms.
