How to Crimp a Connector onto a Cable

Replacing a 2-Wire Non-Polarized Plug on a Power Cord
Installing crimped connectors on your networking cables is a job you can easily do yourself, whether attaching connectors on coaxial cable or unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cable (often called Ethernet cable). This project guide will show you how to crimp the connectors on both types. Before you begin your project, be sure to read any wiring instructions that come with your connectors.

What You Will Need

• Bulk Coaxial Cable

Follow These Steps

Step One
Strip the cable
Strip the Cable
Coaxial Cable:
1. Use wire cutters to cut and square off the end of the cable.
2. Use wire strippers to remove 1/2 in. of the cable’s cover to expose the bare copper center
3. Use your fingers to expose 1/8 in. of braid and foil by pinching and pulling off a small piece of the outer jacket.

UTP Cable:

1. Strip the cable 1/2 in. down from the end using cable strippers.
2. Carefully trim off rip cord.

Step Two
Prepare the wire
Prepare the Wire
Coaxial Cable:
1. Slip the crimp ring over the end of the cable.
2. Use your fingers to bend all of the braid back along the outside of the cable as evenly as possible.

UTP Cable:
1. Untwist each pair of wires down to the sheathing. If you’re working with CAT-6 wire, cut the center core down to the cable end.
2. Lay out the wires side by side in this order: white-orange; orange; white-green; blue; white-blue; green; white-brown; brown.
3. Trim all the wires to the same length, 1/2-3/4 in. from the sheath.

Step Three
Attach the connector
Attach the Connector
Coaxial Cable:
1. Push the end of the cable into the F connector so that the connector tube goes between the foil and outer housing of the cable. Push the end until the white insulator is flush with the bottom of the connector.
2. Slide the crimp ring over the bottom of the connector.

UTP Cable:
Insert the wires in the order specified in Step Two above into the RJ-45 plug. The cable sheath should extend into the plug by about 1/2 in. and will be held in place by the crimp.

Our full-color diagram (PDF) shows the order the wires should go in the plug.

Step Four
Crimp the connector
Crimp the Connector
Coaxial Cable:
Crimp the ring tightly around the end of the connector using the appropriate crimping tool.

UTP Cable:
Crimp the terminal with the appropriate crimping tool.

Step Five
Attach a connector to the other end to complete your project
Complete Your Project
Coaxial Cable:
1. Trim the loose wires.
2. Cut the copper core wire flush with the end of the connector.
3. Pull on the connector to be sure it's firmly attached.
4. Repeat steps one through four to attach a connector on the other end of the cable.

UTP Cable:
1. Make sure the wires are in the right order, extend to the front of the plug and make good contact with the metal contacts in the RJ-45 plug.
2. Repeat project steps one through four to attach a connector on the other end of the cable.
