The Dachshund Dog Knocker was designed by Michael Healy who loves dogs and was particularly fascinated when he heard the history of the Dachshund, whose short legs and long body can be traced back as far as Ancient Egypt. A hunting dog by nature, the modern Dachshund was bred in Europe in order to flush small animals out of holes. In fact, the name Dachshund is German for “badger dog” because it was frequently used in the hunting of those burrowing creatures. The Dachshund Dog Knocker is cast in solid bronze. It was handcrafted using the age-old art of foundry casting. The handmade mold is used only once, giving your Dog Knocker its individual character. The Dachshund Dog Knocker was treated with a dark patina, then hand polished and coated with a clear lacquer to protect its original finish. In order to confirm authenticity and quality craftsmanship, this Dog Knocker carries the signature of artist Michael Healy. The Dachshund Dog Knocker is cast in solid bronze. Brass and bronze are copper-based alloys. The yellow brass alloy used in many of Michael's designs contains 70% copper and produces a warm, traditional brass look. Red bronze contains almost 85% copper. This additional copper content gives the bronze alloy its rich, reddish undertone. The mirrored finish of polished brass and polished bronze is achieved through varying degrees of sanding and buffing. Michael uses these techniques to highlight or accent the raised areas on a piece.
