Advantages include less direct heat transfer between the pump and the engine due to the fact that they are not directly connected. This results in greater efficiency and longer pump life. Pump RPM’s are half the speed of the engine, due to the effective gear reduction provided by the pulley sizes. This will also result in longer pump life since lower RPM’s is easier on wear. A belt “buffers” and reduces the vibration of the pump.
