Protect Precious Cargo With a Truck Box

The bed of a pick-up truck offers tons of cargo space, but it can also leave your tools disorganized and exposed to the elements. A truck bed tool box offers weatherproof, secure storage for tools and equipment. A pick-up tool box is also great for keeping sporting gear, camping equipment, emergency supplies and even groceries dry and safe.

Types of Truck Boxes

The type you choose will depend on your truck bed storage needs.

● Crossbed or crossover. Top-mount crossbed boxes are installed in the front of the bed against the back of the cab, and they mount across the bed over the rails. Most have a single lid that opens toward the cab. A gull-wing model has two lids that each open toward the center, making access easier.
● Side-mount. Side-mount truck tool boxes come in a variety of lengths and can be mounted on one or both sides of the bed. With this option, you can access the content of the box without getting in the bed of your truck. Handy for storing longer tools like landscaping gear, these boxes run the length of the bed. Wheel-well tool boxes are side-mount versions that wrap around the shape of the wheel well to maximize space.
● Tool chests. Tool chests sit directly on the floor of your truck bed without crossing over the top rails. This is a good option if you have a bed canopy or cap that attaches to the rails.
● Underbed. Mounted underneath the truck, underbed boxes are typically used on flatbed trucks that need the entire cargo space.

Choose a Durable Material

To ensure quality in your truck box, look for one made with high-performance materials. Aluminum tool boxes are lightweight, and are the most common. For a durable, rustproof toolbox, consider a diamond plate model. Steel is much heavier than aluminum, so it stands up to rough treatment and heavy tools. However, damage to the finish can leave the box at risk for rust or corrosion. Stainless steel truck boxes have the toughness of a steel box with the anti-rust qualities of an aluminum one. These premium boxes are a more expensive option, but they’re built to last.
