Do misting systems use a lot of water?

How much water your misting system uses depends on the water pressure, nozzle types and how many of them you have, and how long you're running the mister. Generally, it works out to 1 to 1.5 gallons an hour per nozzle. Small misters may have 6 nozzles, while medium ones could have 12-24 nozzles. Large misters could have 40, 80 or even more nozzles to cool a big area.

How much pressure is needed for a misting system?

A water mister for a patio or other outdoor space can be customized to your needs and budget. There are low-, medium- and high-pressure misters available. Low-pressure misters (40-60 pounds per square inch, or PSI) use just the water from your home, while medium-pressure ones (160-250 PSI) employ a pump as well. High-pressure misters are mostly used by businesses, as they're expensive to set up and maintain. They generate a mist using 750-1,500 PSI. With more pressure, you get finer droplets and quicker cooling.

What are the benefits of using a misting system?

Misters use the same mechanism as sweating, known as evaporative cooling: water droplets evaporate from your skin and you feel cooler. It's a simple way to "air condition the outdoors." A patio mister makes a hot climate more bearable, washes pollutants and other particles out of the air and gives your plants a drink. They may also cut back on mosquitoes or other flying pests that dislike damp conditions. Low-pressure misters don't even need much equipment to set up. They use the water pressure that you have in the rest of your house to do the job.

Do misters cause mold?

Misters are outdoors, so consider the surfaces that would normally be at risk for mold and mildew: wood and concrete. However, as the mist is very fine and meant to evaporate, it shouldn't often cause issues. A heavy rainfall would present more of a problem than a well-functioning outdoor mister. Treat wooden surfaces to cut back on mold growth, and avoid mounting or spraying the misters directly on untreated wood. Seal and wash concrete regularly to keep away mildew. If you're concerned about the tubing or nozzles growing mold, simply clean them regularly per the manufacturer's instructions.
