Cantilever Umbrellas

For an outdoor area that lacks natural shade, an adjustable, freestanding outdoor umbrella provides sun protection exactly where you need it most. Unlike table patio umbrellas, cantilever umbrellas allow you to more freely adjust the amount and position of the shade throughout the day.

Cantilever Umbrellas Features

Cantilever patio umbrellas, or offset umbrellas, are tilting patio umbrellas. They have a pole attached at the side rather than the center. This allows the canopy to be adjusted 360 degrees. You can tilt it to follow and block the arc of the sun or to fit with various furniture arrangements. These large outdoor umbrellas typically range in diameter from 8 to 13 feet. A 10-foot patio umbrella with a square canopy can provide up to 100 square feet of shade.

The umbrella’s pole attaches to a heavy base that ensures a sturdy hold against the wind. A cantilever umbrella base can be made from plastic or heavy polyresin panels. You can fill it with water or up to 250 pounds of sand to keep it anchored. Some models come with the stand included.

Umbrella Canopy Styles

Offset patio umbrellas can also add color and style to your outdoor living space. Consider these factors when deciding on an umbrella canopy:

● Shape. The most common canopy shape is an octagon, which offers a classic look. A square cantilever umbrella has a modern, bolder style. For a decorative touch, consider a canopy with a valance. This option has fabric panels that hang along the edges of the canopy for added detail.
● Color. Choose a shade to match or complement your patio furniture. A light, neutral tone like beige or tan will blend with an outdoor atmosphere. A bright red or lime green can be an eye-catching addition to a festive space.
● Lighting. Some umbrella canopies come equipped with LED lights. A solar cell on top of the umbrella charges throughout the day. It then powers strings of LED lights on the inside of the canopy. You can also string your own outdoor umbrellas lights to add ambience to your evening affairs.

Cantilever umbrellas are a great addition to poolside seating or outdoor dining areas. For an umbrella that fits into your patio table, choose a market umbrella with an umbrella stand.
