Larger umbrellas call for heavier umbrella bases.

Shade & Outdoor Structures

Patio Umbrellas

Patio umbrellas offer much more than just shade—they can also bring flair and color to your outdoor space. Make your yard pop with a red patio umbrella. Or bring an island vibe to your pool deck with a bright azure option. Here’s how to choose the ideal outdoor umbrella.

Patio Umbrella Sizes

Follow this simple rule: A sun umbrella should extend over the dining table by at least 2 feet on each side. Measure your table to find the right fit. Small patio umbrellas measure at 5.5 to 7 feet in diameter and medium umbrellas are 7.5 to 10 feet. Large patio umbrellas have a diameter of 10.5 feet or more.

Umbrella Styles

Choose from these two types of freestanding patio umbrellas:

Cantilever Umbrellas. Cantilever umbrellas are attached to a single freestanding pole on one end, rather than in the middle. This style leaves lots of open, shaded space underneath the canopy. They’re ideal for a large seating area, like a sectional. Or slide a pair of lounge chairs or bistro set under it.
• Market Umbrellas. These tall, freestanding umbrellas were originally named for their use in outdoor public markets and cafes. They fit into a patio umbrella stand. Some models are made to slide into patio tables as well—look for a table with a hole in the middle. Market patio umbrellas come in round, square and rectangular shapes.

For easy outdoor decorating, select a patio set with an umbrella, so all pieces match. You can even choose a patio umbrella with lights built in, for a dazzling nighttime look.

Choosing a Base

Choose a patio umbrella base that’s heavy enough to keep the umbrella anchored, even in a strong wind. For a standard 7.5-foot umbrella, the base should be at least 50 pounds. A large umbrella will require a larger, heavier base. Umbrella bases and stands come in a variety of decorative styles. Choose from wood, plastic or metal, and go with one that matches your other outdoor furniture.
