Pool Pumps

The single most important piece of equipment you need to keep your swimming pool clean is a pump. Using a filter, your pump circulates and cleans the water, keeping it clear. Whether you are buying one for a new pool or replacing an existing pump, there are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for one.

What to Consider

1. Horsepower — This is the most important factor to consider when purchasing a new or replacement pool pump. Most commonly, 1, 1.5 and 2 HP pumps are available. The size you need depends on the volume of water in your pool. A pump motor should be strong enough to circulate the entire volume in less than eight hours.

2. Motor Speed — Pool pump motors come in three basic types: single speed, dual speed and variable speed. Single speed motors are the most common and least expensive. Dual speed (or 2-speed pumps) can run at both high and low speeds. Running them at high speed only when needed, will make the pumps their most efficient. Variable speed pumps are the quietest and most efficient. Digitally controlled, these pumps can initially cost more, but have the lowest operating cost.

3. Housing Mount Style — Pool water pumps can be top-mounted or side-mounted depending on which type of filter you are using. The output of your pump needs to line up with the filter, which is dependent on the type, brand or style of filter. The mounting style also depends on whether the pump is to be used for an in-ground or above ground pool.

4. Motor Voltage — Pumps and filters can run on either 110v or 220v power. Most above ground pool pumps require 110v, while in-ground pool pumps may need more voltage to operate. You need to determine the voltage you have available to run your pump.

Check out this guide on selecting a pump. It will help you consider all the factors, including how to calculate your pool’s volume if it is oval or circular, and how the size of your pool’s pipes determines its maximum flow rate.
