Choose the Right Water Heater for Your Home

All homes need hot water, but some require more than others. Know what you need by estimating your water usage before you install a new unit. You’ll need this information whether you’re replacing an older tank or installing a hybrid system.

Select the Right Size

A household of one to two people might only need a 25- to 40-gallon hot water heater. A family of three to five, however, might choose a capacity closer to 50 gallons.
Consider Energy Sources

There are three main types of heaters. If you’re comfortable using gas, you may want to stick with a traditional tank. This standard system keeps dozens of gallons of water hot, to be used anytime. Tankless systems only heat water when you need it. They use less energy than tanks, so they’ll save you money on your utility bill. A hybrid heater, also known as a heat pump water heater, often needs the least amount of space. It sucks up air and uses the heat to generate two to five gallons of hot water per minute. There are also solar heaters, which turn the light of the sun into energy. Learn more about water heaters through this guide

Install Your Unit

Now that you’ve chosen a water heater, it’s time to get it into your home. Calling a professional may be best, due to the skills installation requires. If you want to do it yourself, be sure to read about how to install a water heater before you begin.
