How to Make a Bookshelf Planter

MEASURE
Measure

Measure and mark cuts on the lumber according to the cut list below.

REPLACE THIS TEXT

1- x 6-inch common board

  • Two 24-inch sections
  • Two 7 1/4-inch sections


1- x 8-inch x 6-foot common board

  • Two 22 1/2-inch sections 


2- x 2-inch x 8-foot furring strips

  • Four 24-inch sections
  • Two 19 1/2-inch sections
  • Two 4 1/2-inch sections

CUT
Cut
  • Use a circular saw to make the straight cuts, following your marks across the board.
  • Cut a 1 1/2-inch square out of each corner of one of your 22 1/2-inch sections. This will become your bottom shelf.


Tip: Use a sanding block to smooth any rough edges.

PAINT
Paint

Stain or paint the boards if desired. Allow each piece to fully dry before assembling.

ASSEMBLE THE LEGS
Assemble the Legs

Pre-drill and screw each 24-inch leg into each corner of the 22 1/2-inch section, this will become the bottom of the planter box.

FRAME THE BASE
Frame the Base
  • Place the two 19 1/2-inch sections two inches up from the bottom of the legs.
  • Pre-drill and attach with screws through the legs.
  • Place the two 4 1/4-inch sections two inches up from the bottom of the legs.
  • Pre-drill and attach with screws through the legs.
  • This completes the frame.

BUILD THE WALLS
Build the Walls
  • Place both 7 1/4-inch side walls against the short side of the assembly so that they hang ¼-inch below the bottom of the planter box.
  • Pre-drill and secure with wood screws by screwing them into the side of the base.
  • Place both remaining walls on front and back of side.
  • Pre-drill and secure with wood screws by screwing them into the sides of the walls.

POSITION THE BOTTOM SHELF
Position the Bottom Shelf

 Place the last shelf directly atop the bottom frame.
