How to Kill Weeds
Summer’s heat may have you longing for a lawn chair and a cool drink, but weeds never take a vacation. Turn your back on the garden for a couple of days and you’ll return to find weeds crowding your flowers and stealing water, sun and nutrients. Keeping weeds under control and your garden looking beautiful is no sweat.
1. Add more mulch. Many weed seeds need light to germinate, so keeping weeds in the dark is the fastest and easiest way to control them.
2. Add more plants. Plant fast-growing annuals with large leaves in weedy spots. As they grow, they’ll shade out their competition. Ask a Garden Center associate for the plants that are right for your region.
3. Hand-pull weeds. This can be the safest option when space is tight and more aggressive methods might damage garden plants.
4. Spot treat with an herbicide as a last resort. Not only can it drip onto plants you want and kill them, but it can also harm bees and other beneficial insects. Follow all label directions, wear gloves and never spray when it’s windy.
